Love your stuff but I graduated in 1990. At that point my tuition and fees were still around $2000 a year, I had a $2000/year scholarship and so the check I wrote the school was some trivial number. I got into grad school and my plan was to pay for it myself (knowing my parents would bail me out if the shit hit the fan), when I got a TA job and had a tuition waiver, I was set. Graduated with $1200 in credit card debt which was my last year's spring break trip, paid off with my signing bonus.
There was a brain fart in my comment somewhere. Based on memory, he tuition & fees about 20 years before you were 1000 a year. Add room and board, books, etc, he total was about 2000. My recollection is it was closer to 4000 a year for everything by the early 90s. Not sure why I typed what I did. 8000 doubled is not 80000.
I did some checking. I can't access uiuc's records, but my memory might be faulty. It appears the average cost for a public University circa 1970 was about half what I said. So total cost of 4000 for 4 years? I was also working 60 hours a week in the summer for a buck and a half per.
The current costs are accurate. It is more than 15000 just for tuition & frees. That does not cover room and board, books, drinking, pizza, condoms, and other expenses.
