Bill Self actually coached here and has professed fond memories of Illinois. Why is it an enormous stretch to think he’d be flattered to hear from us. And please don’t confuse that with meaning “actual interest in returning.” JFC

That’s a lot of words to say absolutely nothing.
Do you know that Self was not contacted ?
Yes or no.

Ok, so you think Bill Self’s only concern in life is status. To the point he would mock any interest from Illinois. We disagree. No need to continue this discussion. Bill Self’s only emotion is tied to his ego. It’s settled.

Any interest in discussing what I actually said, or are you just going to keep building strawmans to beat on?

Do you think Bill Self would have any interest at all in coming back to Illinois to coach?

You’re basically saying it. Because to be “flattered” by the interest he’d have to be seriously interested in returning amirite? Oh no, I’m not right. Sorry.

Nope, I'm not basically saying it.  You made it up from whole cloth.  Which seems to be the only way you really know how to argue, to be honest.

“Special?” No. Perhaps MIGHT have an advantage or a foot in the door in some cases. Absolutely.

Sure - but that isn't based on program history or geography except for a very loose correlation.

We have some advantages in certain cases, as do lots of similar programs.

This notion that We're Illinois so of course a coach would be interested, of course Bill Self would be flattered, of course a kid who went to HS in Illinois four years ago holds a special place for the Illini in his heart, etc. is simply naive, video game fan stuff.

You’ve openly mocked the idea that Self would be “flattered” to hear from Illinois. What am I misunderstanding here?

Except for the times when you know, we did have an advantage with kids. Say Ayo, Nick Anderson, Lowell Hamilton. And too many others to list. Or did manage to lure the hot coach. Bill Self. Or Lon Kruger who had coached a football school to a Final Four.

If you'd stuck with that instead of your wild extrapolations I wouldn't have said anything.

You used a dating analogy - let's say you used to date this girl, nice girl, nothing bad to say about her.  You broke up with her, and she was upset about it for a long time.  She never found anyone else she liked as much.  Since then you've been in a relationship with one of the couple hottest girls in the school. Are you really going to be like "whoa, I'm so flattered" when that girl comes to you years later like "you want to try it again?"  Or are you going to kind of chuckle at the notion, which obviously cannot remotely surprise you?

It's just a funny concept.  Just send a text, maybe you'll flatter him!

Oh, so do we have some advantages in certain cases?

Damn, I definitely should've mentioned that in my post.

You're confusing me saying "it's not some obvious given thing that because We're Illinois that an Illinois kid wants to come here, or the top coaching target (or in this case a dude who isn't even really a coaching target because he's a HOFer at a blue blood with a lifetime contract) is interested" with me saying "we have no chance at getting a good recruit or a good coach".  I've never said or even implied the thing you're trying to hold me to, but if it weren't for just making something up that you think I believe and arguing against that instead of the words I actually type you wouldn't have anything to add.

I will say, we have zero chance of Self coming back to coach at Illinois and any "just send a text" thought from Whitman is the most grasping-at-straws wishful thinking I've ever heard of.  Anyone who posted "Illinois should text Bill Self, see if he's interested in coming back" anywhere other than an Illini fan board is going to get laughed at way more than you were.

Dee Brown. Frank Williams. Brian Cook. Jereme Richmond. Kenny Battle. Kendrick Nunn. Brandon Paul. Demtri McCamey. Deon Thomas. They all came to Illinois because…fuck, who knows?

Someday you're going to accidentally stumble into arguing against something someone actually said.

This post, I assume, is simply agreeing with my clear assertion that sometimes we do have advantages in certain situations?

Spark. The only thing I’m arguing with you is that Self would only laugh at being contacted by Illinois. You’re the one putting words in my mouth. Not the other way around. I’ve not tried to make the case that were equal to KU. Never. I’m only arguing that Illinois is POSSIBLY an attractive option for some people with ties to the school. Anything more than that and you’re putting words in my mouth.

Self wouldn’t have to have actual interest in coming back to be appreciative of an offer. Not at all.
