Fields is tied with Aaron Rodgers for 10th favorite. It’s entirely plausible. After Fields and Rodgers the odds drop considerably. So they are fringy among the early front-runners.

I think Poles has had an excellent offseason. A couple of minor quibbles maybe, but I’m not at all unhappy.

While this sounds like a joke, it’s the actual truth. Orlovsky was one of the 20+ evaluators PAMan rejected last year when I was sharing Justin Fields evaluation.

Well, 1/3 of those teams needed a QB. Which is obviously the most valued position. A couple of others chose the best DE and CB in the draft (probably equally good and safer players). There were legitimate options in the top 7-8 picks. I think when Carter was there at 9 there was no doubt who the most talented player left in the draft was (and he was talent/need wise the most obvious fit for the Bears). Not saying this take wasn’t hot takey, it kind of is. But it’s not like Carter is Connor Bedard, the clear cut obvious choice everyone would take.

Carter was supposedly the #1 most talented player in the draft from the beginning, according to like everyone I read.  Was he not?  It was all anyone talked about before the draft - the easy top talent with off field character and work ethic issues.

So every single team in front of the Bears passed on the most talented guy for free.  Yes, they got the guys they wanted - but so did the Bears.  The Bears also got a 4th round pick for the honor, whereas all the teams in front of them just got their guy - and the only GM who got paid to take the guy he wanted is the only GM being criticized.

It's not 'hot takey', it's self evidently stupid as fuck.  One second of reasonable thought shows you that its beyond idiotic.

Well you’re flat out wrong on this one Spark. At least 3 QBs were going top 4, nothing was changing that. Anderson was deemed every bit Carter’s equal. He was probably the best/safest pick in the draft. And probably #1 on more boards. Once you get to Seattle then you can justify taking the best CB in the draft over a riskier Jalen Carter. It’s really only about 6 on down where you can start to apply this criticism. Raiders went with a guy nearly as highly regarded who has an incredibly high ceiling and not all the character concerns. ATL clearly was smoking from their own bong and going with the guy some felt was the best overall player in the draft (certainly offensively). They want to run the ball and then run it some more. If the Bears had had the first pick, and couldn’t have traded down they would have certainly taken Carter if not for the character concerns. There’s at least 4-5 other teams that weren’t picking a DT 1st regardless. They wanted QBs and Will Anderson.

It’s reasonably fair to label Poles as the guy who passed on Carter because of the more than obvious need/scheme fit/talent projection.

I'm shocked - SHOCKED! - that you're defending the most meatbally take to ever be uttered.

It's a horrendous take.  If Carter is some uber-talent, everyone who passed on him deserves criticism.  The team that got something to pass on him obviously deserves less under any circumstance than the teams that let him fall for free.

If he's not an uber-talent (which, despite the revisionist history he ABSOLUTELY has been sold as for a year or more, thus all the "if he's Warren Sapp where's the production?" discussions), well then obviously the Bears passing, getting the guy they actually wanted, and getting a pick for the honor is an even better move.

No matter the scenario, every team in the top-9 passed on him.  One of them got paid to do it.  That team is the one being criticized.  No way around that being stupid as fuck, sorry.

If Poles is the guy that let him go for a fourth rounder, the 8 guys in front of him are the guy who let him go for nothing.
