Nice try with the Obama story.  The government shutdown in 2013 was triggered by a conflict where House Republicans attempted to defund or delay the ACA.  This opposition, not Obama, threatened to halt parts of the government's operations related to the ACA.

It doesn’t mean squat today.  Under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, a large number of Americans are expected to lose their subsidies for ACA insurance.  Without enhanced subsidies, out-of-pocket premium payments for ACA enrollees may rise by an average of over 75% in 2026, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation.

The Trump administration’s solution is to allow a hardship exemption for people who lose ACA coverage to buy low-premium, high-deductible "catastrophic plans.”  However, in 2026, these plans will have deductibles over $10,000.  With Marketplace subsidies ending, premiums may be as high or higher than for better coverage. These plans are unsuitable for those with chronic conditions (e.g., asthma or diabetes) or ongoing care needs like chemotherapy.

Another "solution" from the Trump administration is allowing consumers to purchase "short-term health insurance plans."  Unlike ACA-compliant plans, short-term plans are not mandated to cover essential health benefits, including maternity care, mental health services, and prescription drugs. In addition, these plans may vary in coverage based on pre-existing conditions and can include annual or lifetime coverage limits.

Nobody likes "stunts" and "show votes" for media attention, which does little in the way of advancing policy.  In this case, however, I see the government shutdown as a fight worth having.

This was the Democrat’s plan from the beginning. They didn’t want the government to have to cover all of these out of work, able-bodied people. They wanted to throw it on the backs of the middle class. Once ACA passed, working people who were already paying for healthcare saw their premiums skyrocket. They then gave the excess premiums to uninsured people to pay next to nothing for their healthcare. They then used our tax dollars after COVID to cover those subsidized premiums. Republicans want that gone. Democrats want it kept indefinitely. Fairly soon, if the Dems get their way, there will no longer be a middle class. It will just be the filthy rich and the rest of us as indentured servants. 😑

Republicans have done everything they could to sabotage the ACA.

Before the ACA passed, health Insurance experts were tasked with finding a way to salvage healthcare financing in this country. They came up with 2 possible models.

* mandates with refundable tax credit subsidies
*Medicare for all

"Health insurance experts" came up with a plan to make it look like the ACA was 'affordable' by tossing a few bones to the masses.

Who were these 'experts' ?

"Health insurance experts" came up with a plan to make it look like the ACA was 'affordable' by tossing a few bones to the masses.

Who were these 'experts' ?

Health insurance executives, underwriters, brokers, agents, . People that actually designed and sold health insurance contracts. I knew a couple big time  brokers that worked on it.

Before Obamacare, health insurance in the non-group markets sucked.

*Preexisting conditions weren't covered.
*People with health risks were rated up or excluded
*Maternity benefits were typically excluded.
*Complications of pregnancy usually not covered.
*Lifetime benefits capped at 1 or 2 million
*Pool closing was used to weed out insureds that developed health risks after the fact.
*Premiums were increasing several times the rate of inflation

Obamacare originally was supposed to financed with refundable income tax credits. The mandate; which Trump repealed,  was enforced with income tax penalties. There was supposed to be a public option, but that was not in the final bill. At the end of the day, Obamacare

*Uses private insurance and private healthcare
*Has Open enrollment
*Preexisting conditions covered
*No exclusions
*Only rate up is for smoking.
*Has Maternity benefits
*No lifetime caps

Obamacare care from a conservative think tank.
"He commented more than once that, 'You know, Hitler did some good things, too,'" Kelly recalled to The Times. Kelly said he would usually quash the conversation by saying "nothing (Hitler) did, you could argue, was good," but that Trump would occasionally bring up the topic again.

My health insurance was fine as a healthy young guy in my mid to late 20s. I was self-employed and paying $96 a month for a really good plan with Pekin with a $2k deductible. After ACA Pekin exited health insurance and the same plan was nearly $400 through very limited options. There weren’t many limitations on things like pregnancy, the limitations were how much a person was willing to spend on non-group insurance.

I’m still convinced the whole thing was designed to be so fucking bad that everyone would just throw their hands up and basically beg for single payer universal health care. Robb used to agree with me on this point.

The problems with the ACA were always the weak, poorly enforced mandates and inadequate participation. I knew people that had legitimate exemptions, but were charged tax penalties. Others had their refunds held for no apparent reason..Still others who should have been charged penalties, but weren't..

There was a lot of confusion. The right wing referred to the penalties as fines and spread rumors about jail sentences for no insurance.

The penalty was reduced to zero in 2019.

In countries with similar plans, the penalties are stiff and swift.

That said, the best alternative would be to expand Medicare to cover everyone. That does not Medicare reimbursements would continue exactly as is.

Depends. If you were the GOP, the plan was to let it skate through and be so fucking bad that they could get rid of Medicare.

Deductible? What's that?

Oh - it's something you deal with if you didn't study hard at UIUC and get a real job.
