Right-wing Christian saved by Jesus from transgender porn.

"He commented more than once that, 'You know, Hitler did some good things, too,'" Kelly recalled to The Times. Kelly said he would usually quash the conversation by saying "nothing (Hitler) did, you could argue, was good," but that Trump would occasionally bring up the topic again.

So many rural conservatives don't really benefit from Republican policies. It's complicated though. Depending on their income and where they live; the roads and public transportation might be adequate, their schools might be above average, and they could see themselves as protected by aggressive law enforcement tactics. Their healthcare likely sucks, but they blame shortcomings on the government, and are convinced universal healthcare would be worse.

I gather most view climate change as a hoax to empower government regulators, and resent ideas like white privilege or reparations for slavery. They take pride in the traditional work ethic; which makes some of them easy for the wealthy elitists to exploit.  Many are convinced minorities are living high on the hog off welfare from their tax dollars.

There is also a concern about the homosexual agenda, such as grooming and allowing trannies in the wrong bathroom. Not that they have anything against gay people so long as they keep it to themselves snd stay away from children Sort of like what I heard about black people in the late 50s and early  60s. Adults would say they had nothing against them, so long as they kept to their own kind.

This is just a general observation from a recovering libertarian conservative who grew up in fairly red rural area. It is not intended to stereotype or belittle anyone. Some of my best friends and beloved family members happen to be rural conservatives and many are highly educated.

Also: living paycheck to paycheck which is fine except you can never retire, but that's probably ok because you'll die young due to lack of good healthcare, but if you are genetically fortunate enough and avoid any serious injuries, you can always scrape by as a greeter at the Wal-Mart.

Honorable, sure. But it's needless in a country like the US. A hard message to sell. I mean, there isn't any shame in working hard, I sure worked hard. But when I was scraping up extra money or going through a series of crappy roommate situations in SF, it was so I could be done with that for good eventually, not as a permanent way of life. That opportunity should be universal, and there has to be a way to communicate that hard work is good but suffering is silly because it doesn't have to be that way.

their schools might be above average

This part is really subjective. We have school teachers in Florida levering DeSantis' Stop Woke Act to ban hundreds of books, none of which really should be subject of a ban, and the focus of the ban attempts will narrow the framework of the education. I recall someone saying "They don't want to shutter the schools - they want their kids to be able to read, write and balance a checkbook, but they don't want them to gain critical thinking skills because that might lead them to reject their parent's world view"

So, if a school does a very good job at readin/writin/rithmatic but suppresses the ability to think, is that above average?

We've discussed cash bail here.

Sam Bankman-Fried is out on 250 Million bail. There are people on small drug crimes who stay in jail because they can't scratch up 1k.

Neither should probably have to pony up bail money. Why was SBF given a 250M bail? Do they think he's a flight risk and need to make it really big so he shows up? If the guy has 250M to post, posting it isn't going to stop him from skipping town, I mean the guy lives in shorts and T-shirts, skip off to Thailand and live like a king forever with a couple hundred grand. So either he's not a flight risk (in which case don't make him post 250M) or he is, in which case he stays in jail. Same for the meth dealer.

I meant above average in the sense teachers are not afraid of the students and graduates are at least semi-literate.

One of my high school English teachers had us reading the likes of Cleaver, Vonnegut, Burroughs, Kerouac, Salinger, Mailer, Baldwin.

I should have greater expectations.

those books are now banned. Your parents found out their kids turned out to be able to think and they aren't gonna put up with their grandkids doing the same

Most of my family has been educators or healthcare professionals. I can't imagine my parents banning books. I had an Aunt who actually  crusaded against censorship.

The current conservatives I know think the banned books are hard core porn and are being taught to 7 year olds.

If they knew what was really going on; they would not approve, but who has time to read up? Besides, the truth is boring. The scary story about creeps with a gay agenda grooming their  kids with porn in the school library sells.

Replace the time watching FOX with time watching a network that isn't trying to ban the books. Done.

"When Wilma Rudolph played Basketball". Hard core porn

If you are saying the current conservatives you know aren't trying to ban such a book - then who is?

Good question. People like Glenn Youngkin have convinced them liberals are putting hard core porn in grade school libraries where 7 year olds have access. They share Isolated quotations from some book they never read that was actually only accessible to high school seniors. If someone interjects facts; they change the subject.

The better question is who, if anyone, is pulling their strings?

Is the motive political, religious, economic, other?
