Title: Cycling
Post by: Custard on June 07, 2021, 08:22:16 PM
I now live in a great area for bicycling and am thinking about taking it up out in rural areas where my presence won’t trigger anyone. I don’t know a damn thing about them and I know there are some aficionados here. I’m basically just going to be road riding and on some trails in the state park and wildlife area nearby.

Sometimes I use voice dictation and don’t proofread. As long as it gets the point across I usually don’t bother fixing it.

I suggest you start with riding on multi-use trails to gain hands-on experience.  Then look for low-volume roads that have wide shoulders.

The local bike club may have a map of preferred bike routes in the area.  These maps are typically available online or at local bike shops.  You can also look at the routes that local riders in your area are taking via the ride logging website Strava.com.

The League of American Bicyclists has a good series of “smart cycling” videos on how to ride safely and effectively with traffic.
https://bikeleague.org/ridesmartvideos

Finally, make sure you keep your tires properly inflated, take a water bottle and energy bar on the ride and bring an extra tube and tire levers to fix a flat.  YouTube has multiple videos on how to change a flat tire.

IDK, cyclists are mostly only insufferable when they’re cycling. They are otherwise just normal people. Vegans are insufferable all the time.

Of course, conspiracy theory nuts are up there on the insufferability rankings, so don’t sit too comfortably on your high horse 😎

An adult big wheel should include a cup holder. Otherwise, what’s the fucking point? The biggest advantage to the thing would be that you don’t need to be sober enough to balance.

Driving from the dog park to the vet I had to slam on the breaks as some fucking bicyclist douche (redundant, I know) was going through a stop sign. This caused the dog to slam into the back of the front seat. I reminded the douchbag that he needed to follow The Rules of The Road. He gave me the finger, of course, so I said "Next time I'll just run you over, fuck face!" I felt like turning the Prius around to run the jackass over, but I felt I didn't deserve to have a Great Monday. I hate fucking adult cyclists as much as the unvaccinated. Buy a fucking car or move to China, assholes.

One that didn't expect a douchbag cyclist to run a stop sign. Which actually makes it my fault as I should have expected that given how cyclists treat stop signs.

Been awhile since we had a dumbass cyclist story here...
From today's Tribune fish wrap/bird cage liner:

A vehicle struck a bicyclist who was riding against a traffic signal Wednesday night on Grand Avenue at DuSable Lake Shore Drive in the Streeterville neighborhood, Chicago police said.

About 8:35 p.m., a 47-year-old woman driving a 2020 Honda van hit a 32-year-old man who was riding his bicycle westbound on Grand Avenue, according to a police notification. The bicyclist did not stop for traffic at a red light, police said.

He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital by the Chicago Fire Department in critical condition.

No other injuries were reported. The Major Accidents Unit is investigating.

No citations were issued.

Now if you want to go fast.  Bring back public drag strips.

Driving the AggressiveSon to school, saw a guy riding a bike with short pants and a short sleeved t-shirt. It was 27 with Real Feel at 16. I said, "Look at this guy wearing short pants and a short sleeved t-shirt." When passed him, I said, "At least he is wearing a hat under his helmet."  The AggressiveSon responds, "He his a gym teacher." I said, "Well, I hope he sets a good example and follows the Rules of the Road."

Of fucking course not. The fucker ran every stop sign. I stopped at a stop sign, ready to turn right with my signal on, when he was behind me and said, "I better wait, because I know he is going to run this stop sign even though I am here first." Of course he ran it.

One that didn't expect a douchbag cyclist to run a stop sign. Which actually makes it my fault as I should have expected that given how cyclists treat stop signs.

It's a forgone conclusion (most) cyclists will run stop signs. So, yes, you're arguably on notice, lol.

Good thing there wasn't a collision with the bicyclist. Your Prius (WTF??) might have been totaled.

Should be no need. Extensive public transportation for HS purposes as opposed to elementary and middle school, who do have busing. The problem is that public transportation now really sucks ass and the teachers/admin are extremely overpaid.

Was driving slowly around the park today (baseball game warmup going on) and a lot of streets blocked off for block parties (with parents letting their small kids run amuck), when some lady on her bike with 2 kids in the attached rear carrier came out of an alley without looking. I stopped. She saw see me and stopped halfway out. I politlely waived her on and refrained from telling her that she should be more careful before she and the 2 kids are roadkill.

Never knew the word “cyclist” could carry so much baggage.

The funny thing is most people who ride bikes do not refer to themselves as “cyclists.”  They don't own a lightweight road bike or wear spandex outfits.  Many don’t wear a helmet or clip into their pedals while riding. They’ve simply discovered that a bike is a good, cheap way to get around town, such as commuting to work, running errands and visiting friends.  It's also a simple way to fit a little exercise into your daily routine.

Meet this average Joe.  He’s not a cyclist.

A $1,500 bike for a bicycling “enthusiast”?  The wannabe racing or endurance rider wouldn’t be caught dead looking at a bike under $2,500.  Some are willing to pay up to $10,000.

The bike enthusiast wants a full carbon fiber frame; aerodynamic, light weight build; and the latest components.  These are the folks you see on the country roads wearing Lycra shorts, special shoes, bright-colored helmets and tight-fitting jerseys.

$1,500 is a mid-level price for the industry.  You won’t get a high-end bike.  It will get you a solid all-purpose performer that you can ride on roads, bike trails and even gravel.  It comes with a frame made of steel, aluminum or a carbon-aluminum mix.  Some have electric-pedal assist.  Think a Ford Mustang crossed with a Jeep Wrangler.

These aren’t the bikes Custard sees sitting unused in his neighbor’s garage.  Those tend to be entry-level hybrid and comfort bikes (upright riding position, higher handlebar and wider seat).  They probably cost $300 - $800.

The bike retailers and suppliers made a bet that bike sales would remain strong over the next few years.  It’s always been a boom and bust industry.  My guess is that overall bike ridership will decline from the pandemic peak.  But it will remain strong in large cities with decent bike infrastructure like Chicago.

That’s probably not the newsflash you want to hear.

When we allowed him to cozy up to Castro, rewrite the constitution to fuck with elections, etc., and nationalized industries and land ownership to turn it into a Progressive/DSA "utopia." Well, now 25% of the population has fled and another 50% would flee if it could. So, how is that working out?

Not sure how this number is calculated, but Yahoo Finance was claiming that 283 billion in options were traded in NVDA on Tuesday alone.  Might be people buying back their call options. If it closes over 1200, you have to deliver the stock or buy back the calls? I guess you get the value from selling the stock at a higher price than it was when you wrote the calls, but if it closes over 1200+premium it's a losing bet?

The winning bet is just having 4 years of RSUs vesting

if it closes over 1200 it doesn't matter unless its very close to expiration due to the time premium

for example if the stock is at 1215 and the 1200 June option is 60 bucks, they would be stupid to exercise the option rather than just sell the option for way more money

so you can predict when the option will get assigned when they are much closer to parity,  (like in my example stock is at 1215 and the option worth 15 bucks and change) and roll them beforehand or just don't do anything and let the stock go if you want to sell it

but anyway to answer your question, I sell out of the money options on stocks I own (for myself and clients) to generate extra cash flow

so if it goes up, yay, and if it doesn't go up, yay... only time its a losing proposition is when a stock goes parabolic like nvda has done the last few years, but then I just don't do anything or write waaay out of the money options on it after it makes a huge move

suffice to say, you wrote those calls for X, and now they are worth substantially more than X, so to rebuy your call, you'd be down. I mean, you'd be up because you owned stock that went up in value, but you have less money than if you had never written that call.

Who'd a thunk writing 1200's with the stock in the mid 900's would be a negative proposition.

Yeah its a risk hedge for sure, and gaining 300 points in a stock while losing 50 points in an option is usually a good trade off since you can take a taxable loss in the tax year as well, you are correct though as I'd be better off just letting it fly, but there's always the chance of that not happening.

This happened to me once.

The best part was, this was on the entrance to the Golden Gate Bridge - I was riding to the bus stop right at the entrance. He followed me far enough that he had to take a side trip to Marin to get back to SF. So I told him to enjoy his scenic trip to Sausalito, maybe they have a copy of the vehicle code there.

He should have run him over when he was falsely imprisoning the driver. Not when he was driving on the road.

I'm sure a jury of Utahites would agree if even charges would have been brought.

For a 73 year old, this guy is a freaking rookie. I don't even need to watch more.

Just put a dent in the guys quarter panel, and either he...

1) Gets pissed and calls the cops himself
or
2) leaves and has a dented quarter panel

Third option is once the hullabaloo starts, reach in, grab the guys keys, and ride away

Agree. If you're going in, don't be a puss about it - like this cycling twat.

High marks for the kid for staying cool. I'd don't know that 22-year-old me would have had that kind of restraint. Also, he was cited with no evidence. Nice work, cop. Thankfully the prosecutor threw it out.

my larger point went over your head. If you look at the penalties for actual vehicular mayhem, drunk driving, etc... they are trivial.

Oh, you killed someone while driving drunk. We're gonna suspend your license. Except we will allow you to drive to work, because that would be a hardship. Do we let people who shoot someone get out of prison to go to work, because it would be a hardship?

Then if they drive anyway, what's the penalty? A longer suspension of their drivers license - a suspension they were ignoring anyway.

It is, trust me I've been to enough trials doing victim advocacy.

This one was lovely - guy is 90 years old, mistakes the gas pedal for the brake, runs over 2 kids.
They eventually got some money from him, but his license was never suspended.

https://www.almanacnews.com/news/2014/06/02/menlo-park-settlement-reached-in-lawsuit-over-crash-that-hurt-6-year-old-boys/

The 90-year-old driver of a car that reportedly pinned 6-year-old twin brothers against a wall on Santa Cruz Avenue has denied all responsibility for the resulting injuries, claiming the children were engaged in behavior that was reckless, careless and negligent.

“knowing the probable consequences thereof, (they) placed themselves in a position of danger and voluntarily participated in all the activities,”

That activity being "walking down the sidewalk"

I will say this, maybe Trump is on to something with this whole fuck due process thing...

https://kdvr.com/news/local/cyclist-killed-in-hit-and-run-crash-csp-searching-for-driver/

Drunk driver kills a cyclist. Destroyed the winshield, so it's not a "I thought I hit a deer" thing, the guy thinks about it for a millisecond - if he's tagged for vehicular manslaughter as DUI, he does 10 years in the can. Hit and run vehicular manslaughter, maybe 6 months. So despite this happening with multiple witnesses who got his plates, he just drives off to detox. Will turn himself in in a few days, say "I panicked".

When we get full Trump going, that guy would try to bullshit us for a while with a bunch of smart talk, blah blah blah you gotta believe me and the judge would just go man whatever, the guys guilty as shit, we all know that, and sentence him to one night of rehabilitation.

At first glance, House Study Bill 637 (introduced on January 28, 2026) is styled as a safety and regulation bill for “nonvehicular personal transportation” - a phrase that sounds generic and dull. But reading the actual language reveals something much broader and scarier for anyone who bikes, scoots, wheels, runs errands, delivers food, races gravel, commutes to work, or simply wants the freedom to move in Iowa without turning every ride into a criminal case.

HSB 637 was introduced in the House Public Safety Committee by that committee itself (chaired by Representatives including Henderson, Hermanson, and Kressig) and requested - at least ostensibly - by law enforcement interests such as the Iowa Police Chiefs Association.

What the Bill Actually Does - Byte-Sized Breakdown
The text of the bill (as introduced) would:

Ban Bikes & Devices from Roads Over 25 mph

Penalties are Real Jail Time

Don't worry, Murph. They pussed out and pulled the bill
