Title: NFL 2025: General Discussion
Post by: Reacher on January 05, 2025, 04:45:13 PM
Mayo out after only one year in NE. Would be very surprised if Vrabel isn’t the new coach. I beeline I saw he really wants the job.

Darnold doesn’t see Addison streaking to the corner of the end zone. Will Dan Campbell be able to super motivate his Lions to a big enough margin to overcome his stupidity and arrogance? Doubtful. Going well so far. Surprisingly defensive game at this point.

Shitty pass from Darnold. Looking more like Jets Darnold than born again Darnold.

Romeo Dobbs, with his head hanging, was walked off the field with a guy under each arm to support him after hitting the back of his head on the turf. He's been wearing a concussion helmet for a few weeks.

There have been hints. Reports that the veterans were not happy with Caleb being annointed and not really held accountable. That was discussed midseason. Herbstreit threw it out there as well, hard to believe that would have been completely random. Eberflus wasn’t fired for creating a culture of no accountability afterall.

We would have specifically heard this from differing sources if this was an issue with the veterans

Herbstreit also claimed he had no reason to believe what he was saying.

Again, there would have been a feeding frenzy and there really has not been..

It was related to the midseason hubub about how some of the vets apparently thought Caleb hand been handed the keys to the kingdom and handn’t done enough to earn them. You basically asked for something “pre-Kap.”

I wasn't aware of any of this. I had a feeling it might be a case of a player saying pre-season that a rookie needs to earn his playing time or position. And it's said by everybody, and it's said about veterans too.
Johnson's quote was a couple of days after the draft.

"Anyone who read the original quote in full knows what Johnson explained Monday. His quote was never a criticism of Williams.
This series of events is a sign of good leadership from Jaylon Johnson. He made sure to let everyone know what he really meant. Even though the misunderstanding what not his fault. Johnson reached out to Williams to speak with him and make sure the two of them were on the same page."

I believe Johnson reiterated that to some degree around training camp. IIRC. And it was more than just saying “insert rookie here has to earn his spot,” it was “Caleb can’t be bringing that Hollywood stuff here.”

I do think there was something to the veterans being frustrated with the lack of accountability re: Caleb, but it seems that wasn’t just a Caleb issue, it was one across the board. Even PAMan seems to be conveniently forgetting he heard (a former GM?) say that he feels (or heard?) Caleb thought it was going to be easier than it was. Remember, Caleb promised Tory Taylor he wouldn’t be punting much.

Current coaching carousel predictions:

Bears: Ben Johnson. The Brady factor in Vegas is real, but ultimately Caleb sways Johnson’s decision.

Raiders: Pete Carroll. Brady will settle on a proven winner.

Cowboys: Deion Sanders. Jerry and Deion were made for each other. This is will be a giant soap opera all year. Good times ahead for football reporters.

Saints: Mike McCarthy (but maybe Kingsbury)

Jets: Aaron Glenn. The former Jet returns home to establish a better culture.

Jacksonville: Joe Brady. Good fit IMO.

I thought it was the "roster" that was going to be the deciding factor in favor of the Bear?

That is also part of the equation. It can be both. The clincher is the QB.

Try harder Tempo. This is weak even for you

IDK. I’m a Parkins guy. I only listen to 1000 when 670 is talking baseball or basketball. And when they fired Goff and Spiegel. But after a few months I couldn’t take listening to 1000 anymore and finally tuned back into 670. Anytime I catch someone like Kap is in passing or maybe on the Twotter. One thing I hate about AM1000 is everyone sounds the same except for JHood.

"Last season, Bryce Young and C.J. Here’s what I actually said about Stafford. And I stand by it. He’s largely been a stat compiler (albeit a talented one arm/athleticism) and cemented his HOF candidacy by being traded to a Super Bowl ready winning team (and IMO the refs gifted him that SB, I firmly believe the Bengals would have held them on 4th and goal). I said virtually the same thing I said last night, I would not trust him in big games.

I remember when Robb used this same kind of tactic. Stating I’d started endless “Fire John Groce” threads. I think we found 3 over 2 years (that even came close to fitting the description) then he tried to claim the moderator deleted them. There was little to no moderation on that forum.

You don’t watch football then. Bateman is having a breakout year. He’s a talented guy. A former 1st rounder. Is he Justin Jefferson? No. Is he a guy you can with with? Yes. Bateman has high end #2 capability. Tee Higgins, Jordan Addison, Jaylen Waddle type player. Not a high end 1, but a quality player.

Depends on your definition of “stud.” Is he a true #1? No. But he’s a 1st round pick and a more than capable #2. He’s got 7 or 8 TDs in his last 7 games. That’s stud like production.

There’s talent there. Shakir is good. Coleman is a young 1st rounder. Their young TE is extremely talented. Even Mack Hollins has the occasional big game. And then there’s a guy named Amari Cooper who probably gets some attention from the defense.

Exactly. So maybe Poles should focus on things like the lines and worry about WRs later. You don't have to have them to be an Elite Offense.
Title: Re: NFL 2025: General Discussion

But more often than not you do. SF, Rams, Miami, Cincinnati

And also, the teams without high end number ones are much deeper than the Bears. Tyler Scott and DeAndre Carter are not getting on the field for any of those teams. And they have better QBs. And coaching…
Title: Re: NFL 2025: General Discussion

Those other teams have better lines too. Bengals and Miami are outliers when it comes to OL and they have schemed around it (except against better teams,  obviously).

I wasn’t too worked up about the officiating until I went to twitter. Some clearly botched calls all in favor of KC. How did McDermott not challenge the spot? That was a pivotal play and you knew it in real time. I was too worked up about Buffalo’s pathetic playcalling and inability to get a half yard in the moment to give it much thought.

In today’s game this would be a 45 yard penalty and possible prison time (especially if on Mahomes). The best part is, this hit was “clean” by the standards of the era.

Can’t say if I ever refuted anything Carman or Kaplan have reported. I don’t listen to them enough to have strong opinions on their opinions. I did once say that Brad Biggs’ gut feeling on the quarterback situation wasn’t necessarily a be all end all on what the Bears would do at quarterback.

Why would they cover their ass? They’re gone.

No shortage of former NFL players came out and said film study is on the players (not that I totally agree with that in this case), but many weren’t too sympathetic to Caleb.

At first I was perturbed that Caleb didn’t get the proper tutelage (not bringing in a veteran to mentor him was a huge Poles mistake and I said so at the time), but as I heard more qualified opinions on it, I felt less POd and sympathetic. I couldn’t give a fuck less about the Chiefs, and I pay less attention than I ever have to the NFL, but even I know that each year every progressive NFL fan celebrates the death of the Chiefs any time they lose a game early in the season.  Then they always end up competing for a championship at the end of the year.

You and Murph are basically Steve Buscemi’s character in Billy Madison, except Patrick Mahomes and Harrison Butker are on the “People to Kill” list hanging on the wood paneled living room wall.

He’s been known to mix in backups pretty willingly. That was mostly pre-McCaffery though. I thought there was a good chance Brian Robinson Jr would get a good workload last night. Not enough to bench McCaffery, but I definitely thought it was on the table. The Niners were a M.A.S.H. unit.

That's a hot fucking take for sure.

The smart money was picking up Kendrick Bourne and Jake Tonges. I grabbed Tonges earlier in the week just because I had Kmet and Friermuth and they were both on bye, and I knew Kittle was out. With the other top 2 WRs (after Aiyuk) out, I was like shit I gotta get Bourne and start him but the site shut down pickups 5 minutes before kickoff and I was too late. Mac Jones is not some 3rd tier backup. The Niners outperformed my expectations, but there was no way they were gonna completely lay an egg.

McCaffery is just a fucking stud. My league is some crazy dynasty league where you draft college players and sign them to contracts - after the Rose Bowl (stanford/Iowa) I traded up to get him and signed him to 7 years, everyone told me I was nuts but a RB like that puts you way above the crowd in Fantasy.

My league is some crazy dynasty league where you draft college players and sign them to contracts - after the Rose Bowl (stanford/Iowa) I traded up to get him and signed him to 7 years, everyone told me I was nuts but a RB like that puts you way above the crowd in Fantasy.

Yeah, while Bourne was catching like pretty much everything, I was like hmm. Who the fuck is this.

Might be worth a pickup if Pearsall and whoever else is down. But I don't know if he's a consistent producer. Probably not.

Christian fucking McCaffery is a consistent producer. If he's healthy and in the lineup and you have him on your team, he has to play. If someone says to bench him, they are fucking retarded. I can't say it any differently. And when Tempo comes on and says, durrr, I can see why you would bench him, durrr, nope. Fuck that stupidity.

If you have him, and he's healthy, HE'S YOUR RB1

It's not that fucking complicated.

If the Rams got up 17-3 early there was a very real chance he got sat. But guess what, I played him against you and he did his job. Almost all in the first half, though.

Yes, the niners have a lot of injuries. All the more reason to fucking depend on McCaffery.

Are you really this stupid? I don't think you are, but you actually might be.

So, if you have this guy on your roster are you fucking benching him? Fuck no. So shut your dumb ass up and pick up Sandy and get her starbucks order.

Why so much fucking anger? I’m just telling you the thought process some people had for benching McCaffery, but yeah, it was probably overthinking it. Again, I didn’t sit him against you, and you’re a 61% underdog in our match this week.

If you’re in a deep league maybe (at least 12 teams)Most people aren’t desperate enough to start SFs 4th WR this early in the season. Although I might have been tempted to after losing 3 high end WRs in one week. Lol

i was coming up with a top 10 list to see if this game could possibly be outside the top 10. Don't think so. Just because of the sheer madness.

1) Super Bowl 32
2) Super Bowl 50
3) The Drive
4) Beating the Raiders finally 30-7 in 1977
5) Beating the Raiders again to go to the Super Bowl in 1977
6) Tebow to DT
7) Manning goes berserk and throws 7 TDs vs Baltimore
8) The Fumble
9) This completely nutty giants game
10) Prater beats the Bears - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=euUaOw7jXFw

I had deep reservations about Caleb, his final college season was nothing special and several other quarterbacks seemed to gain on or pass him. I guess I’ll take an L for suggesting that if they were going to draft Williams first they would’ve been better off trading down and just keeping Bustin for cheap and spending the money on pieces to put around him. But it does seem that there are a couple of guys that did seem to pass Caleb in college that have been better pros so far. So I wasn’t totally wrong. The Bears are damn lucky they didn’t get Williams killed last year with that fucking pathetic excuse for an offensive line.

Caleb at the moment is at best the 5th best quarterback to come out of the 2024 and 2025 drafts. I’d put Dart ahead of him right now. I still think Caleb can be at or near the top, but his curve is slower than I hoped/expected.

Very easy. Chicago is a WARZONE. Who wants to live in a warzone?

I mean, if you want to be great somewhere, you want to be great in Miami or LA. Weather is worth a lot.

Yes. Think about the mileage the shitty fucking Bears are still getting out of that 85 team. It's crazy. Now imagine Mahomes being basically the next Michael Jordan in the 3rd largest market, in a place that's starved for a winner.

Dude could have leveraged so many more millions off of that. And it would absolutely be national.

No kidding. When Peyton Manning left the backwater that is Indianapolis, if he'd only been smart he would have signed with Chicago, instead of going to Denver. Whatever even happened to that guy? He could have basically been the next John Elway if he hadn't chosen Denver.

Hard to say, but the dude is talented as fuck. I think he would have been good here.

He made KC a major market team, in a very small market. The shitty fucking Bears actually might have cost him a few million by passing on him.

Yeah, that’s his point. Great in KC or great in Chicago? Choice is easy.

From today's Gazette:

the Philadelphia Eagles had just two sacks in the 2022 regular-season
finale, Chicago Bears Hall of Fame defensive lineman Dan Hampton sent a
photo to some former teammates showing him drinking champagne.
The
Eagles had fallen short of breaking the Bears’ 1984 NFL record of 72
sacks in a season, finishing with 70. So Hampton was thrilled.
Come
later this season, we’ll see if Hampton is sipping champagne after a
Broncos game. The 8-2 Broncos, with 46 sacks in 10 games, are on pace to
 shatter Chicago’s record.
“I’m obviously
interested in what the Broncos are doing as far as getting after the
quarterback,’’ Hampton said. “Of course, I don’t want them to break (the
 record).”
When the Bears set the mark in
1984, one year before their iconic 1985 team won Super Bowl XX, the NFL
played a 16-game season. But the NFL went to a 17-game slate in 2021.
“I
think that if they don’t do it in 16 games, they’d have to put an
asterisk on it,’’ Hampton said of the Broncos’ record quest.
Entering
Sunday’s game against Kansas City at Empower Field, the Broncos are on
pace to have 73.5 sacks in the first 16 games. Led by outside
linebackers Nik Bonitto and Jonathon Cooper, who have 9.5 and 7.5 sacks,
respectively, they are on pace to get to 78 in 17 games.
The
legendary 1984 Bears defense had three eventual Hall of Famers who
reached double digits in sacks. Defensive end Richard Dent had 17.5,
Hampton recorded 11.5, and defensive tackle Steve McMichael had 10.
McMichael died April 2025 after battling ALS.
Dent said he isn’t following Denver’s pursuit of the record as closely as Hampton. But he agrees with
Hampton
that an asterisk should be put on the mark if the Broncos don’t get
past 72 sacks in 16 games but do so in the regular-season finale.
“They say that records are made to be broken,’’ Dent said. “They might be on pace right now, but you still got to do it.”
The
1984 Bears are proud of their record. Tyrone Keys, a reserve defensive
end who played for the Bears 1983-85 and considers himself the
unofficial historian of their defenses then, has put together photo
collages from 1984 and sent them to former teammates.
One
he sent out early this decade had the headline, “Unbreakable 72 Sacks
1984 Chicago Bears 16 game single season record.” It featured photos of
the six top defensive linemen on that team and it was written, “Bond
never to be broken.”
Keys had 2.5 sacks in
1984, including a rugged takedown of Broncos quarterback Gary Kubiak in
Week 2. In a 27-0 shutout of Denver at Soldier Field, the Bears had
three sacks.
One came in the first half,
when Keys burst through the line and belted Kubiak. The quarterback was
lost for the game with a concussion and taken to a hospital.
“Rough
day,’’ said Kubiak, who started due to John Elway having a nagging
shoulder injury, completed three of six passes, and was sacked twice
before his exit. “I was screwed up for a few weeks after that. … I ended
up in the hospital in Chicago and I remember (Bears quarterback) Jim
McMahon being in the room next to me because he had something happen to
him, and he came by and said hello. … I remember the team bus picking me
up to take me home from the hospital and I was still half in uniform.”
After
Kubiak left, the Broncos put in Elway briefly despite his injury. But
with the Broncos down 27-0 at halftime, third-string quarterback Scott
Stankavage finished up.
Kubiak said the
Broncos “didn’t want John to get beat up anymore” and said Elway told
him later that if he stayed in the game, “they’re going to kill me,
too.” Kubiak lauded the legendary “46 defense” the Bears were playing
then under coordinator Buddy Ryan.
“They were exceptionally talented,’’ Kubiak said. “They were a really good defensive team.”
Keys, who said he didn’t mean to hurt Kubiak and was relieved when he was released from the hospital, certainly agrees.
“We
had a bond on that defense,’’ Keys said. “It was a brotherhood. It’s
been 40 years since that 72-sack season, but we’re still making T-shirts
with that and giving them out.”
The Bears
in 1984 ranked No. 1 in the NFL in total defense, the first of three
straight seasons of doing that. But their offense was nothing special,
with Chicago finishing No. 16 in the then 28team league in points
scored.
“With our offense, we never really
blew people out,’’ Dent said. “If we had been able to get big leads and
pin our ears back, we could have been in the 90s (in sacks) or in the
80s without a doubt.”
As for the Broncos
piling up sacks now, Dent and Hampton both said there are more
opportunities now since teams drop back to throw a lot more than four
decades ago.
“There’s more attempts and more chances to get to the quarterback,’’ Hampton said.
Still,
Hampton does like what he has seen from the Broncos’ defense. They have
16 different players with sack statistics, with Bonitto, Cooper, and
defensive lineman Zach Allen, who has 6.0, leading the way.
“Zach
Allen, he’s a fine player,’’ Hampton said. “He gives them inside
pressure. (Bonitto) can get up and field and make some moves. (Bonitto
and Cooper), obviously, they’re good edge players. With their pass rush,
they’re doing it better than anybody else this year.”
Nevertheless, Hampton is hoping when the regular season ends, he again will be sipping champagne.

Bryant with a big game!  Good day!

I almost shit my pants though, that 48 yarder from Nix was a complete dime and a bitching catch by Bryant but he hit his head pretty hard and ended up in the medical tent. Was back in the game shortly though, whew

Guy is playing great. He's very key to the Denver offense because they run the screens behind him and his blocking is usually worth a few YAC. But now getting into the receptions mix, could be deadly. Definitely developing a rapport with Nix.

Huge win, 3 games up on the Chiefs with a head vs head win.

The JJ McCarthy pick for the Vikings is bad. This squad, with Sam Darnold or Daniel Jones has maybe 2 or 3 losses and is dominating the NFC North.

The fact that they threw that away for JJ is insane lol. Their window is open. Those receivers can obviously get NFL open, and their running game is good enough. He just flat ass can't hit a bull in the ass with a banjo.

Not sure what to make of the Eagles. Defense looked pretty dominant the last 2.5 games then shit the bed against Dallas in 2nd half. Or I’m guessing. I didn’t watch (I’m famous for that)! But I would think the defense had a big hand in the collapse since they gave up 24 in a half.

Heard an optimistic Bears caller picking the Bears on the treasonous Score today. “I have the better quarterback (and coach)!” And with the way the Philly offense and Hurts has looked this year, I’m not sure he’s wrong. I’d say it’s close.

Heart says yes, brain says they murder us. Haven’t settled on a prediction yet.

Not sure that’s exactly what ive said. I’ve said many times I’ve never really seen Hurts do anything I don’t think Justin can’t do. Yes, I’ve compared the two many times. I feel like there’s a real chance Justin would have been just as good, possibly even better. There’s definitely a scenario in which he’s worse.

At Docs bar in Bonita Springs FL. I mention I’m from SF and he says “how’s it going out there, I’m hearing all sorts of bad things”

I said - “well Purdy is back, and they beat Carolina, so I think we’re good, he’s a bit rusty threw three picks but the D looks good. Problem is that Stafford is playing like Ohtani so it’s gonna be hard to beat the Rams. Gotta like their chances though”

He didn’t get it. Asked him where he’s from. Minnesota. I said “our quarterback is not named JJ McCarthy - things are great”

Dallas has an extremely good offense as you saw yesterday.  Smash philly to cover in this game.

Dunno. Payton game plans differently for Daniels. Mariota was sacked only twice, they put very little pressure on him, dared him to throw, and he did fine (assisted by some very weird stuff like the Ufanga PI call on 4th and 6).

Daniels? They would have had Bonnitto and Singleton in his face every play, out of necessity. That's what they should have done to Mariota.

Try turning off the sound.

No way Daniels gets rid of the ball as quickly as Mariota so VJ would have dialed up the pressure.  Would have been fun had he played.

It didn't hurt his stats. Lol

Meanwhile everybody on the Vikings hates ex-gopher QB Max Brosmer. Linemen took the day off and receivers dropped the ball when they weren't bouncing it off their hands for 2 picks or letting 1 go thru the hands for a 3rd pick.
Instead of kicking a chip shot tying fg late in the 1st half, the coach puts the pressure on the undrafted free agent in his 1st start. As the Gov would say, Max ran a mean pick 6.

That's what is being reported, but nothing confirmed.  LaFleur said "it doesn't look good."

WR Christian Watson left the stadium in an ambulance and may have broke a bone somewhere in his collarbone/sternum area.  And RT Zack Tom, left the game due to an injury.

The Bears will have a great opportunity next week.  Packers will be lucky to make the playoffs.

The Bear were pretty inept but the defense tightened in the Red Zone at least

Like when they snapped the ball between Loveland's legs when they were actually doing well at the line of scrimmage against the Packer?

The Bears defense? I basically told you this 6x while you complained incessantly about the defense when the offense had 4 first downs through 36 minutes.

As I said, promise me every Bears opponent in the playoffs scores 16-19 points and I’ll sign up for that gleefully.

You were highly skeptical of the Ben Johnson hire largely because of “trick plays” from last year (playoffs?).

TOP was lopsided the 1st half since they could not get off the field, as was discussed at half time.

Correct. Playoffs start now. Hopefully he's learned. Clock management and the opening offensive script are the current concerns on the offensive coaching side.

And as I’ve told you 14x but you don’t seem to understand is that the offense is just as guilty as they are permitted to also control some clock provided they are competent enough to get some first downs. You don’t seem to understand the dual nature of this venture.

It is pretty amazing how they can just be complete dog shit for 3 quarters and then find a way to make it interesting or even win in the fourth quarter. Their luck has run out on them recently and I don’t expect it to magically return in the playoffs when real shit is on the line. Maybe next year we’ll be our year. Unless they just play the two minute drill the entire game.

Teams that wait until the 4th quarter to start playing generally don't fare too well, but it gives the HC the time to rehearse the old 'it's my fault. I didn't get them ready to play' post game presser.

Again, if you ask me if I’m ok with the defense giving up no more than 16-19 points in every Bears playoff game, I sign up for that with zero hesitation. The Bears were tied 16-16 with the ball and 2 minutes left. Can’t blame the defense for everything.

4 first downs through 36 minutes doesn’t cut it.
