We’ve never had a S16 with worse than a 5 seed, no? A 5 seed is basically a 50/50 shot.

“Coach Underwood made it known that I was not good enough to play,” Podziemski said. “I didn’t want to risk being 20 (years old) and not playing. I wanted to go somewhere where I had the opportunity.”

This is not a good look for Podz. It shows his mental immaturity. Clearly, if he struggles at the next level; it will be everyone's fault but his.

No way BU told him he was not good enough. Read between the lines. He wanted guaranteed tick, and BU could not offer that with who was returning plus coming in.

He could have been honest and said he was looking for guaranteed playing time. Or with all the competition at UI, he wasn't sure he could earn playing time.

Or maybe revert to the standard bs and thank BU and UI blah, blah, blah ...

When Damonte Williams plays 28 minutes a game, and you play 4 minutes a game, yes Underwood is telling you you aren’t good enough to play.

Also Goode/RJ played far more too.

Guess what.  Underwood was wrong.  And Podz proved it.

If Underwood couldn’t see that Podz was better than Damonte/RJ/Goode his freshman, why stick around another year?

Brad Underwood is a bad coach in all aspects of coaching.

He owes Orlando Antigua and Kofi Cockburn his entire salary

I have to agree that DaMonte getting 28 mpg was probably excessive.

Damonte played 28 mpg
NBA 1st Rd Pick played 5 mpg.

The NBA 1st Rd Pick then transferred where he lead his conference in rebounding as a 6’5 guard. Grabbed more rebounds than Drew Timme did.

Yet the morons in the fanbase that will defend Underwood no matter what claim Podz wasn’t tough enough to play here?

And Sparky even claims that by playing an NBA 1st round pick more instead of Damonte Williams it would have cost Illinois a Big 10th title. Yes the literal same player that lead his conference in rebounding the following season.

This is why I hate Illini fans. They deserve losing.  All the No Chief No Check people are gone.  All the people who lived the success of the 1980s are dead or in nursing homes.  And what’s left is the politically correct Sparkys of Illinois flat out rooting for laundry with no accountability whatsoever for success.  He’s gotten tricked into think just making the NCAA tourney is a big success when that was the bare minimum from 1983 to 2007.

Pretty crazy that we’ve never had that surprise Final Four/Elite 8 run. Hell, I can’t even think of a surprise S16 off the top of my head.

If I recall properly, the Illini have never beaten a lower seeded team in The Tourney.

If Podz was already an NBA player; then why transfer? Why not enter the draft?

Dom posts some dense shit, but his claim that Podz was an NBA player as a freshman is idiotic.

The talent and basic skills were there. The savoir faire was not. He struggled making the transition from a low level of high school ball and the helicopter dad didn't help.

I forgot. Was Loyola way underseeded  based on metrics?

Was that a morning game?

Did the team collectively look like they were half awake?

None of this matters. 1 seed, 2 All Americans, 1 disgusting loss where the team looked like it was completely unprepared where the highly compensated Underachiever was outcoached by Porter Moser.

Other than that, the season was a success. Just like the play Our American Cousin was a success despite Lincoln's brains being splattered all over the stage at the end.

Why do you think he is lying about what he claims Underachiever told him?

I think he is characterizing what Uberwood told him. He was likely told no guarantees, he would have to earn minutes. He was likely told areas in need of improvement.

Perhaps in his mind, no guarantees and needs improvement = not good enough. He didn't want to take that risk.

BU tells all of them.they have to earn playing time. He might tell RayJ he is a likely starter.  He might have told Lieb it would be a challenge to see the court.

I’ll agree that simply making the tourney shouldn’t be considered a “good year.” We had a 20-25 year period not that long ago where I think we had more tournament berths than Kentucky and UCLA.

He didn’t struggle. He never got a chance to play.

If coach won’t play you, how can you show your skills? Underwood determines who plays.  And why stick around for a second year when Underwood already recruits over you with more 5th year guys?

It was flat out the biggest misevaluation of talent in the history of Illinois basketball.  Period.

It was dumb to play Mike Tisdale over Meyers Leonard.

It was dumb to play Jon Ekey ahead of Malcolm Hill.

Playing Damonte Williams 28 min, and Podz gets walkon level minutes was a collosal misevaluation of talent.

“Podz wasn’t as tough as Damonte”.

Podz just went the very next year and lead his league in rebounding. He very clearly was far tougher than Damonte and a bigger threat on offense.

What minutes did Skyy Clark earn?  He was a turd in after his HS injury and Underwood still played him.

What minutes did Damonte Williams earn?  28 mpg to do nothing on the court.  Nothing.

Bottomline is without Kofi, Underwood would be fired by now.  He’s a poor coach, poor evaluator of talent, and knows nothing but generic coach speak

He didn’t struggle. He never got a chance to play.

Since you never played ball, you probably don't know this. There is something called practice. That is where rotation minutes are earned, not in games.

Once in a blue moon, there is gamer like George Montgomery, who looks horrible in practice, but plays well in games. Podz might be a gamer?

There are also rare guys like Alex Legion who are reverse gamers.

Most play like they practice.

Monte could guard 1 - 4. Podz couldn't guard a lane agility drill cone.
