You can move to Florida. I heard there are some cheap condos in Fort Meyers, and DeSantis will give you a property tax holiday!

Dan Proft and Griffin bought up all the good spots already

Yes, everyone pays property taxes even if it is passed through rent.

Another one of these fools who doesn't believe in economics.

If the state raises your property taxes, you can *try* to increase the rent your tenants pay, but it comes down to supply and demand, if there is nobody willing to pay the increase, you will have to eat the tax yourself.

Thought experiment - if the state *lowers* property taxes, do landlords lower the rents?

Trump is as bad at communicating; just a lot more entertaining. Biden is annoyingly bad. And Kamala Harris would make great host of "Kids Say" or "Sesame Street."

Biden and Harris have done pretty well governing considering the utter mess they inherited.

Desantis, otoh, is very articulate and likely dangerous. The "woke mob" are not just people who he disagrees with; they are the enemy and apparently not welcome.

This all appears to be currently happening, isn't it?

Yes, everyone pays property taxes even if it is passed through rent.

Not everyone lives in Cook County. Pritzker is not in charge of county taxes.

You are probably right about DeSantis.

What specific policy do you find dangerous that you are fearful DeSantis would enact?

It's going up after the forest preserve ref passed.

Still paying it when paying rent.

One thing that I had not factored into rental rates was the COVID eviction moratoriums. BigPAThey is too lazy to find an article on how that has impacted rents (if at all) in the area.

I am not "fearful". Nor am I outraged. Concerned is a better word. Desantis has shown a willingness to abuse the law to remove elected officials for political reasons.

He also supports draconian measures to infringe freedom of speech & assembly and voting rights; some of which have been overturned by courts.

Also favors reducing debt by cutting programs instead of raising revenue. It seems clear that the cuts would not include reducing funds for law enforcement and border security.

He also generally opposes regulations that increase the cost of doing business.

Pretty much looks like a Trump with sharper claws and fangs.

I dunno bout nichi, but Ray believes programs that benefit people should be at least as adequately funded as those intended to punish wrong doing.

Free markets works best for some things, central planning is better for others, like healthcare, education, transportation, public safety.

Privatizing prisons, using prisoners as slave labor for private companies, tax increment financing, a handful of huge companies dominating market share, are not necessarily examples of free markets.

It's also interesting that deficit and debt reduction only occurs when we elect Democrats.

"There is no reason why, in a society which has reached the general level of wealth ours has, (the certainty of a given minimum of sustenance) should not be guaranteed to all without endangering general freedom; that is: some minimum of food, shelter and clothing, sufficient to preserve health. Nor is there any reason why the state should not help to organize a comprehensive system of social insurance in providing for those common hazards of life against which few can make adequate provision." -- Hayek

You need to change your name to the straw man.

If we lowered property taxes and gave everyone 20 million dollars, rents would go up.
If we raised property taxes but zeroed out everyone's bank account, rents would go down.

The job is to tease out the effect of a property tax increase disregarding other impacts. In the end, in a rational free market, landlords will charge as much as renters will pay, regardless of their costs, so property taxes have no direct impact.

As an indirect impact, if property tax increases made being a landlord a bad financial decision, properties would be taken out of the rental stock and sold, and that in the end might have an impact on rents - but that's not your argument. Your argument was that property tax increases are passed on dollar for dollar to renters, which is not true.

Oh come on. Obviously any increase is spread over the units for rent in any building. Have you ever looked at a commercial lease?

Wrong. Econ 101. Supply. Demand. Cost of goods does not change that curve
