I don't think we disagree with locking away people who commit violent crimes. That's a very small part of the prison population.

Where we seem to have a disconnect is that it appears you prevent the problem of violent crimes by locking people up. Funny thing life, new babies are born each day, some of whom will be violent criminals eventually and are not currently locked up. Illiniray and I make the argument that there is a path to preventing some of those new babies from committing violent crimes.

The police state solution is to just let whatever happens happens and lock up anyone who commits a violent crime. That's a recipe to continue having violent crime, because there are always new offenders being born. There was a great line in the Jon Stewart piece, that the cops are in the "Crime solving business" not the "Crime prevention business" so they aren't very interested in preventing crime. The most damning line is that they don't want to ban guns from domestic abusers because there is a high prevalence of domestic abuse within the ranks.

Not bad points. I've heard fetal alcohol syndrome discussed as a root cause for those early in their pregnancy who don't know they are pregnant and lack regular healthcare. There is also the issue, in Chicago, of lead water pipes as a possible cause.

Where exactly do you live? What's your metropolitan area per capita murder rate compared to SF anyway?
San Francisco's murder rate is below that of Colorado Springs! The home base of Focus on the Family and the Air Force Academy.

Of course.  But there was a story today of some 9x felon, on parole for a weapons charge, who.was arrestsd for threatening some.16 year old girl on the L who was just trying.to get  to school. Lock that fucker up and throw away the key.

The irony being that he had all those felonies but went to Indiana and they sold him a gun

Side note: I shy away from using the word "felon" and stick to the actual crimes - I mean Sam Bankman Fried and Elizabeth Holmes were convicted of many felonies.

They won't be threatening anyone on the L, though they did ruin some lives.

Why would he bother? Maybe they took his drivers license, which is far easier to lose than the right to get a gun, and couldn't drive to Indiana, where they wouldn't stop him from purchase.
