Let's see... We have PD's that are very costly, the highest % of incarceration, crime rate increasing, lead the universe in mass shootings, have prisons for profit, and an obscene amount of firearms. I don't think the solution is more money to do more of what we've been doing. How about about a little more root cause analysis and a little less political pandering all around?
I have been thinking lately about "root causes" as I know a person who will not take prescribed meds to deal with an issue that impacts the person's focus. Now, thankfully, the issues with this person are not such that violence is a potential; it just messes with their ability to be "successful" in life. Smart person, can hold a job, has a support system, but cannot focus enough to channel their smarts into school or a "career" matching their smarts type of thing. Won't take the meds because the person does not like how they make them feel, despite knowing it would help them succeed in life.
As you travel around Chicago, you see all these tents set up under underpasses, etc. and now I see people "living" between downtown underground L stops. If the percentage of these people who are homeless due to mental issues that can be helped by meds is, say, 25% (it may be more or less, who knows?), how do you get people to take their meds that do not make them like how they feel, when "smart person," who has a ton of advantages in life, won't do it? I'm game for suggestions because you are right, this is not working.
