While we are employing Judge Judy level-logic/implications in explaining the history behind the interstate highway system, I can acknowledge a) my home rests on land stolen fair and square from some individuals whose ancestors  happened to stroll across the Bering Straits who failed to adequately capitalize on, and hold onto, what they had discovered and b) the color of my skin has made it easier for me to accomplish that which I have worked hard for.

Interesting. The forementioned I-74 and I-70 mostly cut though farm land. I am pretty sure the land owners were reasonably compensated. They also profited from the added value of access and development -- and side benefits of borrow pits.

That was something Iived through and observed as opposed to read about years later. It is interesting the way different people were treated and affected. Was that due to racism or socioeconomic conditions and political clout? If you are on the left, of course it was overt racism. I do see it as symptomatic of implicit / systemic racism.

This is my point.
Farmland owners in Central Illinois were reasonably compensated.
Housing owners in West Oakland were not.

Secretary Pete has given you the first clue as to what is different between those two sets of people.

And note "cut through farmland". When those roads were being planned, they did their best to find a route that didn't plow over Farmer Ted's house.

Oh, I am not denying there was a difference between the way people were treated and affected. I observed part of that first hand. Part of it was due to structural racism. I don't think someone said let's build expressways though black neighborhoods and do so in a way that will divide them. They just didn't care. The residents lacked the political and socio-economic clout to make them care. 

Same with the construction of interstates in way that assisted white flight. I always thought there was a lot of implicit and some explicit racism in that. They not only avoided Farmer Ted's house.  They supplied an exit to the land where he built a subdivision.
