Having your healthcare tied to your job is pretty bananas in 2025. People get stuck working jobs they hate because they are terrified of losing their healthcare. That’s not freedom IMO. There’s only one reason we don’t have universal healthcare, there’s no money in it for rich people.

I (my insurance) got charged $1675 for a couple hours in the ER basically for a bed and a couple Tylenol. 13 years ago…

Ambulance ride one block was $800

When I went for kidney stone removal surgery (again about 13 years ago), my bills was $23,000+. I was in and out in two hours, as soon as I woke up from the anesthesia

Encourage legal immigration at a sustainable pace, give them a reasonable and clear path to citizenship, collect taxes on their income like everyone else, and depending on their income level make either government or private healthcare available to them. It’s not that difficult.

This is a partial truth. Dems want to restore Medicaid cuts from the Big Ugly Bill. Technically, illegals are ineligible for Medicaid. However, some blue states have found work arounds to provide limited benefits for illegals. But this is only a small percentage.

I think we are all well aware that you were fully behind it and are more than ok with our government/taxpayers footing the bill for it. Some people disagree.

I don’t really think any group actually wants to deny anyone healthcare. As a policy in this country we don’t actually deny people healthcare. Low income people have access to the kind of healthcare we see in western nations with single payer healthcare; while people who make decent money/have an employer pay for insurance and have more options. The bigger argument is simply who pays for it and how. Healthcare is expensive and people are divided on how it should be administered and paid for in the US. The left wants to socialize medicine and points to other western nations as proof that it works. 

It’s not all sunshine and rainbows. The US still leads the world in medical innovation because there’s money in innovation. Socialized medicine, like most socialized industries, suffers from lack of funding, innovation, and being overrun.  That’s why people come from all over the world to get advanced treatments here.

We could have “free” universal healthcare here and “free” college like places in Europe and pay 50+% effective tax rates and everyone outside the wealthy could live in a shitty flat and not be able to afford a car. That sounds fun!

Not all states have Medicaid expansion. Single payer systems generally deliver better coverage than Medicaid. They are also as good as or better than all but the elite private plans

Actually, most people want to socialize the financing via single payer insurance, not healthcare. The medicine would still be primarily private. UK is a notable exception..

A lot of people also don’t even know what anything is called, they just want “free” healthcare. But you prove my point that the argument is who is paying for it and how. That’s the crux of the whole argument.

Research universities provide *some* of the innovation. And in those cases yes they are funded by government but the research itself is often funded by private companies. Most of the innovation in US healthcare is driven by private money, which is what sets us apart from the rest of the world. For better or worse.
