As I watched the latest hearings I was still wondering why Capitol security wasn't prepared. I was also thinking that, despite overwhelming evidence, some reasonably intelligent people actually blame Pelosi.
Another thought occurred to me. First I don't think it was intentional, but the Capitol Police, or whatever they are called were seriously outnumbered. It appears the career people in charge of Capitol security downplayed intelligence and miscalculated.
Trump still says he offered 10,000 national guardsmen (Hannity says 20,000), but Pelosi thought it would look bad and said no. Republicans recently doubled down on this. No one offered a smidgen of credible evidence to back it up. Pelosi does not have the authority to accept or decline such an offer. It is just another Trump lie.
That said, we have recently learned that the Trump mob on January 6 was fairly heavily armed with weapons ranging from baseball bats to semiautomatic guns. They didn't really need to use much force, because they faced such little resistance. What if Trump had really offered 10,000 national guardsmen and Capitol security accepted? Could it have been worse? What if armed Proud Boys, Three-percenters, and Oath Keepers fired on the Guard, and the Guard returned fire?
