I’m dead serious. I’ve been on staycation the last week and have pretty much checked out aside from what people send me directly, like my mother’s CHAZ updates.
On friday evening, US Atty Gen Wm Barr announced that Geoffrey Berman, the US ATTY for SDNY, was stepping down. Outgoing SEC Chairman Jay Clayton, a former atty for Deutsche Bank, was picked as his replacement. Craig Carpenito, U.S. attorney for New Jersey, was named acting United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, pending Senate confirmation of Clayton.
This looked suspicious for a number of reasons.
- The friday night timing.
- The SDNY is investigating a number of sensitive cases involving Trump and his close associates.
- Normally, when a US prosecutor steps down, the temporary replacement is is their deputy, in this case Audrey Strauss.
- Jay Clayton has no experience as a prosecutor.
- Deutsche Bank gave Trump credit when others would not, and was apparently involved in a Russian money laundry. Collusion?
- Berman heard about his resignation from the media, and said he would not step down until the Senate confirms Berman or hell freezes over; whichever occurs first.
Barr then announced Trump had fired Berman. Trump said he had nothing to do with it. Berman eventually agreed to resign after Barr / Trump agreed to name Audrey Strauss instead of Carpenito.
Another case of attempted obstruction?
