This is a dumb argument. Hey - I don't have to work! I can get my insulin for FREE! Of course, I don't have diabetes, so I don't need it, but if I did, fat city!
It's even a dumber argument than people who rail on food stamps. Every person alive eats occasionally. We have had long threads about "not being able to lead a horse to water" regarding mental health care. If we made a free annual physical a benefit for all citizens, 30-40% wouldn't even go to the doctor anyway.
The people who benefit the most from Medicare and Medicaid are Doctors who get more patients. Doctors, last I checked, do work.
The people who would benefit the most from Universal Health Care would be our hardest working entrepreneurs. Our economy would be so much more dynamic and create more jobs if people who want to start businesses weren't shackling themselves to jobs to keep insured, and it would be far easier for them to start companies and get employees if they don't have the added cost of health plans.
Employer sponsored health care programs are GREAT for venture capitalists though. Early stage startups, if they want to grow and hire anyone from larger companies, have to offer good health care plans. The only way they can afford that is to take more VC money and hand over equity.
