I work in the sustainable ag industry and while those barriers do exist, the biggest barrier is that what they do now works, and a lot of sustainability initiatives don’t add any value to their operations. There is also mistrust because companies like Indigo, run by coastal eggheads with no farm background, came out and signed up a bunch of farmers to do carbon sequestration and overpromised and underdelivered. If a product or practice pays, farmers will use it.
"Sustainable Ag" as a term is overused and wishy-washy. There’s really no consensus on its meaning. These days, it looks more and more like an oxymoron to me. Modern agriculture has not been kind to soils.
As to Indigo, they need thousands of farmers willing to rethink practices. Good luck with that. Most farmers don’t want to change. Regenerative practices that increase soil health and store carbon are not a priority for the industry.
