Lots wrong with that hit piece. Just about all of it.

“Tom Hazlett, a good friend who is an esteemed and highly regarded professor of economics at the University of California at Davis, coined the term to describe any female who is intolerant of any point of view that challenges militant feminism.”  -- Rush

"Feminazi: Widely misunderstood by most to simply mean “feminist.” Not so, boobala. A Feminazi is a feminist to whom the most important thing in life is ensuring that as many abortions as possible occur. There are fewer than twenty-five known Feminazis in the United States.”  -- Ibid

“We could really use him now, what with Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan, Tip O'Neill and Jerry Falwell, Gary Hart and Donna Rice, the Moonies, the feminazis, the Naderite crusaders, and the television evangelists.” -- Thomas Hazlett

Someone will let me know what he really meant.

I suspect it would be fairer to say Limbaugh exploited and helped foster reactionary bigoted culture than to say he created it Get real. It predated him. Are we going to blame him for the second KKK, the America First Committer, and the JBS?

Because it's early 2021, I'll phrase this remark in modern parlance:

"I didn't have IlliniRay stanning Rush Limbaugh on my 2021 bingo card."

Saying Limbaugh was not as bad as Hitler is somehow stanning for him. Lol. Also, Rush was influential in reshaping talk radio, but he did not create reactionary bigotry. Neither of which makes him a saint.

And Archie Bunker was perceived as the villain on "All in the Family." Right! That is why the sequel was called "Michael's Place".

Things do get absurd here at times.

If you think Archie was a hero in that show, it's probably because you haven't watched it since you were a kid.

I don't know how much his character was changed/evolved for the sequel. I'm not talking about that.

Edith was an intelligent, sharp-tongued foil in Season 1. The writers changed her after that. One assumes market research was involved.

I'm now listening to the @maddow repeat on TuneIn.

She's talking about minimum wage, which the Senate parliamentarian just ruled against (within a budget reconciliation framework). The difference between MSNBC and Faux News is exemplified here.

She's advocating a Radical Leftist® viewpoint, to be sure. But she's not saying anything that's demonstrably false. The closest she comes is saying the $15 standard is "wildly popular."

Polling is between 57% and 59%. That's not what I'd call "wildly popular."

She's a New Yorker from the Bay Area by way of a Rhodes Scholarship. Perhaps she doesn't know that Kansas is not as expensive as Palo Alto.

Perhaps she doesn't know that a federal mandate to make pay equal in Hoopeston and Park Slope is likely to cement a permanent Republican majority, however evil Mitch McConnell might be, simply because small business owners will perceive it as a fight to the death.

And now comes Pramila Jayapal of Seattle, who also doesn't know about Kansas.

Jesus Fucking Christ.

Archie was the flawed protaganist; though likely unintended. Not really a hero, and not really the typical antihero. Lovable bigot is the best description.  The meathead son-in-law was the typical self righteous young liberal. Unintended?

I watched it as a young adult and have watched it since. Edith was witty/ funny. She was also submissive and enabling. She swept things under the rug.

I just find the popularity of Archie interesting. Maybe your generation found him crude and offensive. Others, even older exers, not so much.

"Norman Lear originally intended that Bunker be strongly disliked by audiences. Lear was shocked when Bunker quietly became a beloved figure to much of middle America. Lear thought that Bunker's opinions on race, sex, marriage, and religion were so wrong as to represent a parody of right wing bigotry. Sammy Davis, Jr., who was both black and Jewish, genuinely liked the character. He felt that Bunker's "bigotry" was based on his rough, working-class life experiences, and that Bunker was honest and forthright in his opinions, showing an openness to changing his views if an individual treated him right. Davis in fact appeared on All In The Family to tell the Bunker character this."

Let's call it 58. That's 58-42 - a margin of 16%. Pretty hard to get a 16% margin on anything around here

He didn’t create bigotry. He helped create the atmosphere where being deliberately insensitive to others’ problems was considered legitimate political expression. This behavior was previously considered “just being an asshole.”
