To me the proper protocol is we avoid speaking ill of the recently deceased. If we must comment while their family is mourning; try to think of some nice things to say and keep the critiques fair and honest. Another good ideas is to try and avoid emulating the very conduct we are lambasting.
Rush Limbaugh often explained that he did a mix of serious discourse and irreverent satire, without telling the audience which was which. This was a winning formula and it allowed him to say things many others were thinking, but were afraid to say. If it went too far; that was the irreverent satire part. This often went over the heads of his detractors, much in the same way conservatives do not get liberal irony.
I was sort of a Rush fan during the early ears. By 1998, I thought he had become somewhat of a parody of himself. More recently, I felt like he had abandoned real conservatism to drink the Trump kool aid. Put another way, he had more or less sold out to what he once called the Keepers of odd Knowledge (KooKs).
One more thing. I disagreed with Rush most of the time. I can still respect the extraordinary influence he had.
