I think some of the other people who spoke (Giuliani and Brooks especially) said a lot more directly inciting things than Trump did.

This would imply he's pretty damn stupid. I mean, look at the rabble that was at the rally. How could any sane person expect them to be able to tell the difference between the literal and figurative?

Will Trump's ego allow him to say "I was too dumb to understand these guys would take my words as an order to invade the Capitol!"

I don't think it's worth parsing that question. Trump is a thug. He's been a thug.

He promotes violence and thuggery, from telling police don't be too gentle, to offering his thugs bail money if they got arrested for beating up his perceived enemies.

There’s no implication necessary. I said he’s a fucking idiot.

But no, his ego will not allow him to say that. He doesn’t really have to explain himself though. Enough Republican senators will vote to acquit that he doesn’t have to say anything.

If you want to impeach him for the totality of his actions, that might be legitimate too. I don’t think you can impeach him for being a racist demagogue or a thug, but he definitely failed to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution.
