Round like a circle in a spiral, like a wheel within a wheel
Never ending or beginning on an ever spinning reel
Like a snowball down a mountain, or a carnival balloon
Like a carousel that's turning running rings around the moon
Like a clock whose hands are sweeping past the minutes of its face
And the world is like an apple whirling silently in space
Like the circles that you find in the windmills of your mind!
Like a tunnel that you follow to a tunnel of its own
Down a hollow to a cavern where the sun has never shone
Like a door that keeps revolving in a half forgotten dream
Or the ripples from a pebble someone tosses in a stream
Like a clock whose hands are sweeping past the minutes of its face
And the world is like an apple whirling silently in space
Like the circles that you find in the windmills of your mind!
Keys that jingle in your pocket, words that jangle in your head
Why did summer go so quickly, was it something that you said?
Lovers walking along a shore and leave their footprints in the sand
Is the sound of distant drumming just the fingers of your hand?
Pictures hanging in a hallway and the fragment of a song
Half remembered names and faces, but to whom do they belong?
When you knew that it was over you were suddenly aware
That the autumn leaves were turning to the color of her hair!
Like a circle in a spiral, like a wheel within a wheel
Never ending or beginning on an ever spinning reel
As the images unwind, like the circles that you find
In the windmills of your mind!

I am rarely without headphones. I work (physical tasks) better if my mind is engaged.
Yesterday, I spent my active hours reordering the basement room where I keep my tools, parts and extra tech equipment. I've installed some LEDs around the base of the wall, where shelves block natural light, to provide a stern warning for uppity molds that might feel liberated by summer humidity. I'm also performing a general spring cleaning in there.
I went for my walk at the break of dawn, and found three computers and a Vizio flat screen TV that Chinese students set next to their dumpster in hopes that someone would rescue them.
It'll take me a couple of hours to dismantle the desktop (Lenovo, 8gb RAM, probably about five years old) clean the PSU and MOBO, and put it back together. The two laptops (Asus, four years old) will need a sticky keys bypass or reinstallation to get on their efeet. Plus some dusting. They don't have optical drives, of course, so I'll need to attach a USB optical drive. Fortunately, I have one.

I just realized that I do not believe I've purchased a piece of music in maybe 5 years.
For me, it's certainly longer.
I remember buying a record in 2001 for sure. But around that time, I had so many associates in the music biz that I got most things for free. I was largely responsible for playing the music between and before live acts at The Highdive, so all the major reps gave or shipped promo CDs to me. Some of them were in paperboard promo sleeves (Fat Possum comes to mind) but most were regular copies.
I really enjoyed the Black Keys performance, and I told them I hadn't received their CD from the rep (who was a UIUC alum working in Los Angeles). Patrick was dubious, but Dan totally got it, and gave me a copy.
Those were good times.
-
I should add that I've purchased CDs for Heather, who is a technical troglodyte.
Also, my Echo can't play Radio Foyle. If I ask her to identify the BBC stations in Northern Ireland, she can list it. She's dumb.

I remember having a conversation about Pink Moon with Brendan Gamble, who was mid-Pink Moon obsession. I respect and (frankly) revere Brendan Gamble for his musicianship.
"River Man" is the best Nick Drake song, and it's on Five Leaves Left. Bryter Layter is the best Nick Drake album.

Their only conscience is money. None of them have any real functional skills, so they have found a grift. I mean, Limbaugh at least was a real broadcaster until he saw a path to major bucks, but a lot of this new crew would be homeless if they needed to do any productive work
Rush has an established listener base and makes the most money for the rest of his short life by staying the course.
Shapiro is hedging his bets because he's sensing he may be betting on the wrong horse.

Where do you disagree with Shapiro? As someone who considers yourself a conservative, I’m genuinely curious just who you align with.
Mancow has always been a childish Howard Stern knockoff. I remember listening to his show on 103.5 The Blaze (now Chicago’s LGBTQ+ Voice) on my way to high school the morning Chris Farley was found dead.
Rush from what little I’ve heard is unlistenable. I remember when he was a big deal back in the 90s though.
Never heard the other guys.

I believe in capitalism -- private enterprise and free markets -- as the default settings. Most of the time, that is going to produce the most goods and services at the lowest price. We do need some regulation to protect against predatory practices. Moreover, we should be prepared to consider some degree of public ownership and / or central planning when free markets fail. In fact, we do that. The main areas where private ownership & free markets don't work all that well are healthcare & healthcare financing, transportation, and education. It is no coincidence we have made huge public investments in all 3.
I am not familiar offhand with Shapiro's take on public education or transportation, but I know he repeatedly says free markets are the solution for healthcare; which is utter nonsense. Few could afford healthcare without healthcare financing, but insurance has to be radically repurposed and heavily regulated to serve as an effective healthcare financing tool. Most people are either insured through Employer Sponsored Insurance (ESI) or Medicare, both of which are government programs that would not exist as such in a free market. ESI is less of a government program, but it is still shaped by government regulations and is partially financed by tax subsidies.
Also, on climate change, Shapiro sounds relatively reasonable compared to the outright deniers, but, in the end, he is more wrong than not.
Overall, he strikes me as a reasonable sounding ideologue who believes in Capitalism as dogma. I am more of a pragmatist who recognizes that, despite some excesses and limitations, capitalism is the best economic system we've got. We just have to mitigate against those excesses and limitations as appropriate.

The issue with Capitalism is externalities. A free market would in fact produce the best outcomes given nominally rational actors - but in a real system you can do things like dump a bunch of crap in a river - which would be a cost of doing business that you would need to account for, but if the cleanup of the river is in fact paid for by people downstream from you, it's not really a free market, it's a corrupt market, where you take some of your costs of production and have them paid for by someone else.
It's a simple thing for government to deal with externalities - you have to pay for your waste, air pollution, pay a proportionate cost for your use of roadways and the CO2 pollution caused by that, etc... then we would be able to correct for those costs.
Would we do that, a lot of US industries would be a lot more competitive internal to the US because Chinese competitors would have to pay the true cost of their shipping. But that would be a problem for US oil companies, so we don't do that.

Libertarianism has a caveat about respecting the rights and liberties of others. Destroying the environment is not respectful of the rights and liberties of others.
-
On what planet?
An honest interpretation of libertarian principles (which is rare) must acknowledge that an individual has the right to inflict his whims on his property, but not on anyone else, and not on anyone else's property.
That's only logical, because naturally the other individual would have the same rights.
-

Not just rational actors, but benevolent actors. A rational but self centered actor might conclude, for example, it is in his / her best interest to privatize profits and socialize losses and costs. Or to dump his waste in his neighbor's water supply. Or to steal his neighbor's resources. And so on. A benevolent person would not. Idealistic systems like socialism and libertarianism fail because humans are more rational -- and self centered -- than benevolent.
I always liked the ideas of carbon taxes and credits.
-
Idealistic systems like socialism and libertarianism fail because humans are more rational -- and self centered -- than benevolent.
I’ve always thought the same.
Meanwhile so many people/companies are on the government tit in some form or fashion sometimes it’s hard to distinguish one from the other. So I don’t see our society going libertarian any time in the near future.

This is an odd sentence because "libertarianism" and "socialism" aren't concepts that occupy the same axis.
Libertarianism is a term that relates to how much control the government to enforce societal rules/standards. The maximum case is anarchy.
Socialism relates to whether various functions are funded by government or private industry. The maximum case is communism I guess, but I think using either label gets muddied because in US culture these words have been co-opted to just mean "BAD" even though huge sectors of our society are government run and run pretty well. There are plenty of reasons to complain about the government here, but compared to places where the government doesn't run such things, we do a lot better.
I'm confused by how you use the word "idealistic" about socialism as a concept. Is the fact we collect taxes from everyone and use some of them to pay the cops, teachers, firefighters "idealistic"? Is your assertion that it doesn't work because since the cops are funded by the government, they will do a shitty job compared to if they are privately funded?
History is littered with cases where things like the military or police were basically private security systems that the wealthy funded for themselves and the rest of the rabble had no such protection. Those countries failed. There are present examples all over the undeveloped world - and it's in large part why those countries are still undeveloped.

Let's define terms. That will help.
libertarianism is an idealistic political philosophy. Socialism is an idealistic economic system.
Socialism is an economic system based on public ownership and central planning. Communism is a political system to achieve socialism via class struggle, dictatorship of the proletariat, etc. Democratic Socialism is a political system to achieve socialism gradually via the ballot box.
Capitalism is an economic system based on private enterprise and free markets. Libertarianism is a political philosophy that effectively promotes laissez faire capitalism.
Social Democracy is is a political system that uses some public ownership and / or central planning to mitigate the excesses and shortcomings of private enterprise and free markets. In other words, you wind up with a mixed economy.

Socialism refers to a centrally planned economy with collective ownership. Having the government step in where the private sector fails does not constitute socialism. That is called a mixed economy or social democracy.

Most of the time, the free market run by the private sector does the best job of providing the most goods and services at the best cost. Sometimes not so much, such as education, healthcare, and transportation. Also social services. We also need to protect against predatory practices.
One might argue that if public ownership and central planning works for the fire department; why not nationalize everything? Well, as it is, our mixed economy American food industry produces enough that we could distribute the surplus free to the poor. Socialism would be nationalizing the entire chain of production, from the farm fields to the grocery shelf, and we'd wind up with bread lines.
The idealism is that "from each according to ability, to each according to need", works.

That furthers my case for what I call Social Democracy. The private sector and free markets has its place, and indeed should be the default. However, public ownership (I would stress public over government) and central planning have a place. Certainly military and law enforcement to start.

Are you suggesting the Feds keep an eye on Custard?
Reading Wikipedia last night, I never knew the coincidences, I guess, that took place. Oswald had recently gotten the job at the book depository via a friend. The route Kennedy was taking was publicized. Oswald had a co-worker drive him to his house (Oswald didn't have a car) where Osawld had not been staying to get "shower curtains" (the rifle) the day before Kennedy was shot. If Oswald had not gotten that job, how history could have been radically different.
-
Thanks to the Patriot Act and general indifference within the population, they’re already keeping an eye on all of us.
Also feel there’s a 0% chance LHO acted alone but like most things in life all I know is a whole bunch of stuff somebody else told me 🤷🏻♂️

What I never had heard is that the ballistics on the rifle matched an attempt a week or two beforehand on some John Birch Society wack job who had been fired as a general as a result of being a wack job.
The ballistics and the having the dude drive him to his house, where he was no longer living, to get the gun makes me think too many people are over thinking this. Oswald was a pro Castro Marxist. He had been on the Dallas FBI radar and they did nothing (but cover their asses about it after the assassination).
It is no different than the 2016 election. There was a 5% chance (can't remember the actual percentage) and it hit. Seems like that is what happened here.
-
Dealey Plaza is a spooky place to visit.
When I went, in 1999, it was exactly the same. I don't suppose it's any different now.
I didn't see anyone on the grassy knoll.

I returned to AH for the Eagles/Marshall Tucker concert in 74. MT was just taking off at that point. They ended their act with some shit stomping rock. When the Eagles started off more mellow, about a hundred or so MT fans started yelling for more of the warm up guys. Glenn Frey got pissed and told them to just fucking leave if they didn't want to listen to the Eagles music. I've been a big fan of his ever since. MT was good but not in the same strata. Great concert!

Some may remember the CU band Hum. They were a thing in the mid to late 90s. I always liked them.
I just learned they released a new album for the first time in like 20+ years so I checked it out.
It seems there has been relentless pressure from cult fans to continue doing live shows and to release a new album. Pretty cool for a bunch of guys that took normal jobs a couple decades ago.

An honest interpretation of libertarian principles (which is rare) must acknowledge that an individual has the right to inflict his whims on his property, but not on anyone else, and not on anyone else's property.
That's only logical, because naturally the other individual would have the same rights.
I used to say that if Marxist socialism could possibly work; we wouldn't need it. Humans aren't automatically governed by reason, or ethical restraints, or compassion. We have to cultivate them.
btw, If rights are tied to property; what happens if 1 to 3% own most of the property?

“When these people who are public figures use their platforms to push back on things like masks in schools, it just gives credence to people running around doing that anyway,” Higgins-Ingram said. “And it’s costing lives.” Higgins-Ingram noted that while country singers can obviously say whatever they like to their millions of followers, she can respond by not buying their concert tickets and merchandise and songs.
Jackie, a San Diego resident who spoke on the condition of anonymity for professional reasons, started to distance herself from the country genre after the 2016 election. She tried to tune in again a few years later, but after Floyd’s death, she found she couldn’t listen in good conscience when so many Nashville singers ignored what was happening in the world.
“I do miss the music, but I am also trying to be more responsible with what media I allow to take space in my brain,” she said. “Some people think you can separate the artist from the art, but I don’t believe you can. I think that someone’s personal beliefs do filter into the art they make, sometimes in really subtle ways, and when you consume that art, it influences you even if you don’t know it.”

But Gruden

The great mystery is who organized the hit on Gruden? NFL HQ? Raiders? Heard Jason LaCanforwhateverhisnameis wonder if someone sent the NYT a thumbdrive with the 650,000 emails and Gruden is what that NYT decided to run with after reviewing them.

I just realized that the Beatles song "Help!" was probably not written by the Beatles.
The modulations and arrangements simply don't fit with any other work that they did. ever. And it's a movie soundtrack title theme.

Funny, I just booted up Revolver. But Revolution is on the White Album...
And what's completely freaky - you look at the cover art of Revolver, yes it's just art, but the depictions and the quality of the album, the lyrics and interesting musicality, it's a revolutionary album, you can easily look at them and think they are in their mid 30's. McCartney was 24 years old when Revolver was released.

At the risk of boring Chicken George, who knows this better than I do, I followed them on and off from the beginning.
Peter Green, Mick Fleetwood, and John McVie came from the Bluesbreakers. Circa 67. Green had replaced Eric Clapton.
Bob Brunning was briefly the original bass player even though the band is named for drummer Fleetwood and bassist McVie.
Brunning later played with Kim Simmonds and Savoy Brown.
Christine McVie married John and joined FM about 70.
Green, who was one of the best blues rock guitarists back then, had issues and was more or less replaced by Bob Welch early 70ish. This song is vintage Welch FM..
I stopped paying attention, and they reemerged with Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham, churning out popular hits.
Welch, who took his own life about 10 years ago, had some solo stuff.

He sings older songs but better than the originals. I always request Cat and the Cradle. But he is a sweet person and has a sweet family. He does a lot of Eric Clapton.

I think I nailed why you are following her around, to be honest.

So I decided to go on the Gram just now to see what’s up and this was like the 3rd post I saw…

I have a TickTock but rarely ever go on it. As attractive as all of the young girls dancing are, it’s not that stimulating.

It is apparent you are more of a MILF guy at this point. Nothing wrong with it

Going to guess she is high maintenance.
Why? Because all women are, amirite?!

If that were the case, there would be no need to add "high" to maintenance.
Your response shows you are much further behind in terms of gender appreciation than most of us here.

My musician buddy is adamant that Josh Homme is a hack. It's kinda funny how much he really hates that dude. Side note, he also hates Mark Tremonti, and I take issue with him on that'n.

It’s a mixed bag of 33 songs and I feel they could’ve condensed it into one album instead of three. Some of the songs do plain suck though on the different acts. It’s a concept album and I think Billy is trying to shake shit up, be creative, and just try new ideas and concepts. He is kind of a musical genius though imo. I’ll take the best few songs off each act in my opinion.
Act 1- Butterfly Suite or The Good in Goodbye
Act 2- Beguiled or Every Morning
Act 3 (best total album of the 3)- Spellbinding, Fireflies, or The Canary Trainer

Country mostly went to shit this century. It's like they are trying to imitate country music. Like PMSMan mentioned. All hat ...

PMSMan. Another good one I'll have to add to the rotation.

I believe there is probably more good music coming out today than there’s ever been. In many genres. But the downfall of traditional radio and the reliance on streaming in some ways makes it hard to find the good stuff even though it’s all at our fingertips. People are locked into singles and whatever their app is hustling, and most people don’t buy/download full albums anymore and fall in love with deep cuts. The flip side of that though was the other night after the MJ Lenderman album got done playing, my Apple Music got on a heater playing stuff in the same vein and rattled off 15+ songs in a row that were all good and by artists I’d never heard of. I ended up making a whole playlist just of those songs that were served up to me by the algorithm. I really like that the folk/americana/non-nashville country is truly in a golden era right now.
-
I have come across some excellent Indie stuff. I'd recognize it If I saw it I again. There is just so much canned mainstream bullshit to wade through.
There always was a lot teeny bopper crap, but there used to be FM stations that played songs longer than 2 minutes. I listened to WPGU in high school and college.
The Rolling Stone back then was arrogant, but they were an alternative source of information.

Been listening to this band Highly Suspect lately. On the lighter side of my tastes, but pretty solid overall.

Anyone keeping up with the Van Halen stuff that’s been coming out? Pretty much to the point where I think DLR, Ed, and Alex were all miserable fucks.
Alex has his new book “Brothers” coming out. He’s given me the impression he’s a bitter old man the last couple of years and the parts of the book released so far seem to be re-enforcing that IMO.
-
I like the new HS album. Was discussing it with my neighbor buddy and he sent me this. Kinda funny because we have HS and VH in back to back posts.

Yeah I like that one too. The only one I really don’t care for is MCID. That said, love the tracks Canals and 16 off that record.
Reportedly, Alex doesn’t even mention Sammy Hagar in his book. Ed and Alex seemed to have an us against the world viewpoint.

Yeah those two off that album are good. But agree all their other albums are better.

I was an OG Deftones fan back in high school. Not the Jewish one where Murph’s kids go, but it wasn’t a bad one. I was pretty mad at Deftones when White Pony came out, but it turns out they pivoted at the perfect time and are now finally getting the credit they deserve. This one was once an afterthought and has become a cult classic. The red goggles are fucking dumb though.

For Custard too.
It's not so much the age of the years as it is the style.
Even tho I enjoyed a sunset in May last night, and it's not even July, this 1 is better stuff imo.
My formative years were bands like the Stones, the Dead, the Allman Bros and then stuff like Asleep at the Wheel popped up.

Chambana’s own. Pretty easy to hear they came up in the same music scene as Hum in the mid to late 90s. They broke up after this album, but it came to be a cult classic that spawned a bunch of Emo bands in the 2000s that everyone says they hate but actually love.

After going back and forth about going to LA to see Oasis, I didn't pull it off. Thinking it over, should have gone. Tickets - not great but to get inside what really was less a concert and more an event, could be had for 250 or so at the Rose Bowl. And while they aren't the same young punks of the early 90's, Noel Gallagher is still rocking very hard, Liam seems to be in good voice, and the band was basically the brothers, and even Bonehead is on this tour, Archer and Bell were in the band longer than Guigsy.
I guess it's been fairly difficult to get tickets to the recently announced Rush tour, even with the added shows, and 300 seems to be the minimum buyin. For no Neal Peart - but Geddy seems very enthusiastic about the shows so it will probably be a banger, but I'm not gonna travel for it.
The nostalgia acts really are in full flight though. A small bar (think.. Mabel's on Green) near us has the following acts/prices booked.
BOC - 166 (no word on if there will be More Cowbell)
ZZ Top - 266
Wang Chung - 57
Jefferson Starship - 92
Erasure - 97
Flock of Seagulls - 52
Marshall Tucker Band - code locked for members, will probably be 200
BOC still has the 2 main dudes, ZZ Top is 2/3rd with us, don't know much nor care about the others - Jefferson Starship, who even knows who is in that band. I think Erasure is just one guy. It's really sort of sad.
-
Van Halen is still 80% with us (if you count both singers). But it might as well be 0%.

And even the 80% doesn't count if none of the speak to each other. Excellent point though, there are members, and there are MEMBERS. But sometimes, it's not that clear cut - reference Bon Scott/Brian Johson

This is the only correct take.
If Custard was in high school or college during the Van Halen heydays from 77-85, and he said "Van Halen Sucks", he would have gotten his ass beat in, rightfully so.
Presumably he was a Wham! fan.

It's not really a take. I just like them. I like their sound. Eddie was amazing, and they just worked.
The David Lee Roth/Sammy Hagar stuff, to me, was always secondary. It didn't matter who was doing vocals with those guys. As long as Eddie was playing, it worked. They're not my favorite, but they were always up there. They absolutely do not suck. If someone says they suck, they're fucking gay.
Yes. I said it.
-
Eric Clapton, by many accounts, is an absolute horrible person. Complete asshole, piece of shit.
But he can play. I could watch that dude play guitar nonstop for hours.
The guy on Jethro Tull said he wanted to be the best at something. He was playing guitar, then he heard about what Clapton was doing. He was like, fuck that. I can't do that. So, he played that flute thing. And became the best at that.

Agree, but I think Roth is underrated. The vocal on Running with the Devil for example I think it just works - along with Michael Anthony's harmony. I think the Hagar stuff is good too, but it's more anthemic arena rock whereas the Roth stuff was just flat out rock n roll (I think 1984 sort of lost the plot but is still great).

We saw him at Alpine when I was at UIUC. Unreal. Just imagine he was doing double bill with Stevie Ray Vaughn (that wasn't the Alpine show I attended, I was there in 1988). SRV was just insane to watch, seeing him at Foellinger in 1986 was a real treat.

Totally agree on Clapton. I’ve seen the Stones, The Who, VH, Metallica, and some really great bands; the most “awestruck” I’ve ever been at a concert was watching Eric Clapton going full guitar god mode on White Room.

Roth, much like Mick Jagger was far from a “great singer,” but he was a top notch showman and “it worked.” Supposedly the powers that be wanted to replace Roth with Hagar back in ‘77. I like both eras of VH. I never actually saw Roth. I saw Sammy VH about 6x. I was a big fan of both. Ed was able to be more creative with Sammy. And Ed became more pop oriented, but they still had plenty of rockers.
-

Yep. Seen the Stones multiple times. They are absolutely amazing live. It's an event. Seen Metallica up close. Scorpions. Skid Row, Warrant, Motley Crue. Back when you could go to a concert for like 20 bucks lol.
I never saw Clapton live. I would have loved it, tho.
-
I remember standing in line at Ticketmaster and getting two tickets for VH in like 1988 for $40. Entire Monsters of Rock show probably wasn’t more than $30. VH, (this might have been where I saw The Who? I know it was Alpine Valley which was also where I saw MOR). Metallica, Scorps. Great day.
-
Monsters of Rock 5/28/88 at Alpine Valley was Kingdom Come, Metallica, Dokken, Scorpions, and Van Halen. Still have the ticket stub. $27.50.

Saw the Grateful Dead a couple times. Both times The New Riders of the Purple Sage opened. Both times, Marmaduke played some jams with the Dead.
First time was 1970 at the Coliseum on Wabash. We listened to Led Zeppelin on the ride to Chicago. My friend had just bought LZ 3.
The concert was pretty decent. Both Micky Hart and Pigpen performed.
Second time was at the Auditorium in 1971. Hart wasn't there and Pigpen was sick. It wasn't great. The New Riders were better.
My favorite recording of the early Dead is Live Dead. My favorite overall recording is Dead Ahead.
I am not big on their studio albums.

I saw the Dead also, but I seem to remember the concert being later than 1971 and I'm thinking that it was at Assembly Hall and not the Auditorium.
And as in an Asleep at the Wheel/Jimmy Buffett show, I do remember who I was with for both more than the music.
I'll say it. Springsteen shows were the best.

Can't say I was a Twisted Sister fella back in the day.

For as much hate as Sebastian Bach gets, he’s one helluva singer and voice. Even now he still can…
-
I like The Stray cats lately

I just remembered you saying stuff about Dee Snider on here before
-
I thought he was dead, but I think I was confusing him with the Warrant guy.

I remember years ago reading in a magazine that Sebastian Bach's advice to aspiring musicians was to "quit school," and I thought to myself, "now there's a guy who's got things figured out."

I trust most things that are Rick Beato-approved. The sheer joy and amusement you see in him from 3:50 on is what it's all about.
Yeah, these guys are weird, but it's fun and interesting. Not in my wheelhouse for the most part.
-
Yeah, I don't hate it. Weird but in a good way.

Not sure but this song seems to be more popular now that it was when it came out. It’s everywhere the last couple years.

I've never heard of it. 😂😂

I've never heard of it. 😂😂
It was a big song with young adults in the 80's, so... guess you aren't young enough
-
An older cousin., rip, once said, of Kiss, if you can get past their weird appearance; the music's not half bad.
