So as I’ve been saying all along, Fields has PLENTY to improve on. What I’ve also said is that they have put him in a position to where he needs to be near perfect to succeed at a high level. They clearly are not putting him in the best position to succeed.

In the audio from Tim Jenkins.

“That’s one of those plays where Tom, Peyton or Mahomes says “I’m not effing doing that, we’re throwing that play out today right, Andy?”

"He commented more than once that, 'You know, Hitler did some good things, too,'" Kelly recalled to The Times. Kelly said he would usually quash the conversation by saying "nothing (Hitler) did, you could argue, was good," but that Trump would occasionally bring up the topic again.

Jenkins was every bit as critical of Getsy (I’m not sure he even said his name though). Critical of guys like Chase Claypool as well. But hey, let’s just go the lazy route and blame it all on Fields, so much more convenient.

I like this analysis (Tim Jenkins) a lot. He’s critical of Fields when he should be, but also acknowledges there are other things at play.

I think the "he has to be near perfect" is a narrative and an excuse for a lot of this.

Is Getsy bad? Yes.
Is the line bad? Yes.
Is Fields bad? Yes.
Is Getsy optimizing Fields' strengths? No, because
Getsy wants an NFL QB not an RPO College QB.
Should Getsy say fuck it and just do an RPO college offensive scheme and allow Fields to run amuck and fling the ball when he thinks a guy is 5 yards wide open? Yes.

Ok, well learning to play NFL quarterback is hard. That’s why there’s only 10 or so good ones every year. The rest average to mediocre. It’s even harder when you’re not being set up to succeed. Fields has been a starter for just over a season and a half. It reasonable to be critical of Fields. It’s unreasonable to point to him as the sole reason the Bears are bad, or that he isn’t a high end starter yet.

There does come a point when you say, he’s just not the guy. You can usually tell if somebody has it or not. The #1 thing is you see Fields can’t and isn’t processing the field/defense like he should be. The reason Purdy was/is good so quick is he CAN process that information. Just like other QB’s who are successful. You/they saw Lance wasn’t that guy. It’s very hard to “teach” that asset to somebody. You can have all the physical traits in the world, but that is the most important one. Period.

At 28 starts, and not much to work with up to this point, I don’t think we’re “there yet.” Mitch got 50 starts and would have had more if not for injury. Let’s get to the back of this season before we make an “he’s just not the guy” declarations. And if Fields fails here, I promise you he will get another chance elsewhere.

Again, Purdy has blocking, weapons, and coaching that Fields does not enjoy. I won’t argue that Purdy is a better “processor.” You know who else was a good “processor.” Chad Pennington. He was ok. But not a stud.

Brandon Aiyuk would be far and away the 2nd best weapon on this team (and very close to DJ). And he’s like #4 in the pecking order in SF. And Purdy has a top 3 OL.

But that can be improved, See: Josh Allen, Jalen Hurts. Not everyone enters the league a processing machine. You know who is supposed to be an elite processor? Mac Jones. Is he elite?

That’s why Shanahan was rumored to be love with Mac Jones but they went with more upside in Lance.

You think Purdy would do better with the Bears than Fields is? You think the 49ers would make that trade straight up?!

I too don’t think it’s time to give up on Fields yet either, but I’d take Purdy in a heartbeat.

I think Purdy might make the offense look more consistent, but limit the upside. So, in other words. Better shore up the defense.

And let’s not forget that Purdy is a complete anomaly. It’s pretty rare to find a day 3 quarterback who can be a legitimate NFL starter.

Limit the upside? What upside? They had a chance to show what that upside might be on Sunday, when they were getting waxed. They elected to run and check down.

We didn't see any upside Sunday.
