The lack of pass rush is concerning
I think they were concerned about Finn's running ability and hoped to bottle him up a little.

He has to stop staring down his receivers. When he had tons of time he would make his reads. Otherwise he was forcing it. He had a guy wide open for a TD on that INT and he instead waited and threw to the primary WR he was staring down and the guy read his eyes and picked it off.
We'll see if that is an issue going on with playing time and coaching, but almost every pass hit the receiver in the hands.

That 4th down pass, although fortunate, could be the confidence booster needed for a good season.

I watched it 3x and I couldn’t see anyone “wide open for a TD.” Mostly because of the camerawork.

Toledo returned 16 of 22 starters from last years team with an NFL quarterback prospect.

We have problems running the ball which is a concern seeing Toledo was not a good defensive team at all.  I thought our defense waant too bad really.  We were only rushing 3 or 4 guys and never blitzed much.  Our number 1 priority was not letting finn scramble.

Kansas will be a very similar matchup.  KU wasnt impressive against missouri state was a 27-17 game halfway thru 4th Q.

There was a guy running a post route right through the middle of the field. The guy defending him went (along with 2 other defenders) to the guy Altmyer was staring down.
Because FOX News told me so…

Could have sworn I saw a defender between him and the goal line, but ok.

The Toledo player at the top of the screen was step for step with the guy across the middle. And had the angle to push him further inside.

It was a terrible decision, but “wide open for a touchdown?” I don’t see it.

So as you can see, there were already 3 defenders in the area. The 4th guy had good coverage on the guy going down the middle.

I always looked at this game as a tough one. Same with the Ks game.
Ks didn't have their starting qb and it's not known how much, if any, he'll play against us.

ThePAMan was at the game. He wasn't limited to camera views.
Nonetheless, the ball shouldn't have been thrown.

Good morning shirtcockers

I am glad we won. I hope this was just a rough start, because the defense was not great. Defensive line put no pressure on Finn, our secondary was weak.  Running game meh. I like what I see in Altmeyer. He needs to stop staring down his targets, and our Oline needs to give him a little more time. Glad Lunney had more than 5 plays and was using TEs.

In a nutshell, this was a regression to typical MAC level Illinois football. No way we even sniff the west title playing like this,

I was at a soirée during the game the other night and wasn’t really able to pay close attention after the first half. Just rewatched the extended highlights. Toledo is a good, experienced, well coached football team that was treating this game like it was their Super Bowl. Illinois looked like a team with a lot of new pieces. Toledo is wayyyy better than IU was last year.

AP has Kansas at #35, Toledo at #41 and we got 3 votes to put us at #45.
And their updated today rankings have LSU at #5 and Clemson at #9 with their 0-1 records. 🤔

Kansas 6' 220 lb QB Jalon Daniels is set to return against us. Daniels was pre-season Big12 Offensive Player of the Year.
