It's the tenth anniversary of RBG's incredibly selfish decision to not retire when, at age 77 and a cancer patient/survivor, her party held both the Senate and the White House.
Bravo RBG. Brilliant strategy.
Should this be a separate wtf is up SCOTUS thread? It is going to be fucking interesting. It looks like lose/lose/lose for Trump and the weasels McConnell and Graham. OK, maybe they have an out? Obama was a lame duck? Wait, what was that about a Biden rule? A reference to 1992? Was George H. W. Bush a two President?
Meanwhile Grassley and Murkowski have recently reaffirmed. Grassley this summer, Murkowski days ago. Cory Gardner is up for reelection, behind in the polls, and is another past 'Biden rule' advocate. Susan Collins is 12 down in the Quinnipiac and is already saying the November winner should pick the replacement. Then there is Mitt Romney. Are there 4 no votes?
Meanwhile, besides Collins and Gardner, 11 other Republican Senate seats are now considered vulnerable, including Graham's. Dems have 2 vulnerable seats. If Dems gain 4, they win control of the Senate.
If Trump & McConnell ram through a hard right replacement; that should motivate opposition turnout. Even if Trump ekes out an electoral college victory, he might still lose the Senate.
It might be wiser to do nothing, or even nominate a female version of Merrick Garland. Except that is not gonna fire up the Trumpsters.
Republicans are thinking it's best to motivate their own base. Plus, they'll need a vote to steal the election and some Senate seats. My guess is he nominates a hard right anti-abortion woman and McConnell forces a vote timed to affect the election.
