The Minneapolis mayoral candidate moved to Minnesota from DC in 2016 after failing to win a school board seat . He was somehow placed into various govt jobs, and lost a Mn House representative race in 2018.
He won a senate race 2 years later. His 1st electoral win put him in the Mn Senate in 2020 and his campaign manager was convicted of perjury regarding absentee ballots. He faced an ethics violation over campaign expenditures.
He repaid $11,000 in campaign funds from Feeding Our Future and is on video celebrating with group members over their court case to continue the funding of a program that has resulted in 50 convictions and guilty pleas. With more to come.
In 2022, 6 years after moving to Minnesota and 2 years after his 1st electoral win he was appointed chair of the Senate Higher Education committee and vice chair of the Senate Human Services Committee.
The Minnesota Department of Education was the controlling agency in the Feeding Our Future program.

This is not normal. Nor is a man, who may or may not have run a lemonade stand as his only business experience, winning the Democratic primary for NYC mayor.

The recipent was also later awarded a conviction in the Feeding Our Future fraud by the DOJ. I've seen no pics of the award.
According to court documents, Abukarwas the founder and executive director of Action for East African People, a non-profit which she enrolled in the Federal Child Nutrition Program under the sponsorship of Feeding Our Future and Sponsor A. Between October 2020 through 2022, Abukar falsely claimed to be serving as many as 5,000 children a day at her various sites in Bloomington, Minneapolis, Savage, and St. Paul. In total, Abukar fraudulently received approximately $5.7 million in fraudulent Federal Child Nutrition Program funds. As part of the scheme to defraud, Abukar also paid more than $330,000 in kickbacks to a Feeding Our Future employee. Abukar spent millions on real estate, including a 37-acre commercial property in Lakeville and spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to purchase an aircraft in Nairobi, Kenya.

I get the irony of "Defund the Police" as a slogan.

Using it was probably a bad idea. It motivated the base, but alienated numbskull Republicans -- the same  type who have trouble sorting our the distinction between Nordic style Social Democracies and shit hole socialist dictatorships chosen via "elections"

The difference between policing in white suburbs and black neighborhoods is what is meant by "Defund the Police"

She was asked what Defund the Police would look like. She said s suburb. She goes on to give a detailed explanation.

If that doesn't fit your preconceived notions; that means you were wrong.

You maybe thought it meant taking all the money away from law enforcement. It actually means shifting priorities; for example more for crime prevention
