I said he played bad. As did everyone else. If you extrapolated something different from that, well, sorry.

Let me reiterate, Justin Fields was bad against KC.

Why does everyone think you MUST take a guy at the top of the draft?

Rodgers, Wilson, Lamar, Hurts, Purdy, Dak, Jordan Love, not to mention Brees, Brady, Marino, Favre etc. you don’t have to draft a guy at the top of the first round to find a quarterback.

Plus, if they trade back, good chance they’ll have a high pick next year.

I definitely don't think they MUST take a guy at the top of the draft to get a good QB.

If I had the choice though, and I had the top pick in a draft that's been considered QB-rich for a number of years now, and I wasn't sure whether I had a long term QB - I'd probably get the guy I thought was the best QB with that top pick.  It isn't that common that you end up with the chance.

You could obviously also make a list of guys who did go #1 overall and been varying levels of good+ - Bradshaw, Elway, Aikman, Bledsoe, Peyton, Vick, Palmer, Eli, Smith, Stafford, Newton, Luck, Murray, Burrow, Lawrence.  That's 15 of the 27 QBs taken #1 overall since 1970 - how many of them would be the best QB in the history of the Bears (including Fields so far)?

That doesn't mean, obviously, that there haven't been busts there too - there have - but there have been a lot of good QBs taken #1 too.  I could very well be wrong but I'd guess that's a notably better "hit rate" than the rest of the draft has at QB.

Again, trade down to 2 or 3 and there’s a good chance you’re drafting #1 next year. Supposed to be some good QBs available then too.

But, none who have been evaluated as high as the two this year from my understanding.

Quinn Ewers?

Won't the same risks of picking a QB at #1 exist a year from now?

By then you’ll have an abundance of high picks and FAs flooding the system. Draft a QB every year until you get it right. Your franchise should be built to win in the long haul, a la SF, KC , and Philly.

Since 2000 here are the guys who went #1 at QB:

Mike Vick, David Carr, Carson Palmer, Eli Manning, JaMarcus Russell, Matthew Stafford, Sam Bradford, Andrew Luck, Jameis Winston, Jared Goff, Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray, Joe Burrow, Trevor Lawrence.  Bryce Young is too soon to know what you've got IMO.  Definitely some busts, but a lot of good QBs on there too.

Here are the top-10 QBs who didn't go #1:

Joey Harrington, Byron Leftwich, Philip Rivers, Vince Young, Matt Leinart, Matt Ryan, Mark Sanchez, Jake Locker, Blaine Gabbert, RG3, Ryan Tannehill, Blake Bortles, Marcus Mariota, Carson Wentz, Mitch Trubisky, Pat Mahomes, Sam Darnold, Josh Allen, Josh Rosen, Daniel Jones, Tua Tagovailoa, Justin Herbert, Zach Wilson, Trey Lance.  CJ Stroud and Trent Richardson too, but too early to really tell on those guys as with Bryce Young.

There are some really good players on this list, but I think if I had to take a blind stab at one of these two lists, I'd probably take it off the first one.

Agree, or no?

IMO the worst thing you could possibly do in terms of building a franchise to "win in the long haul" is to spend big money on mediocre play at the QB position.  That's exactly what I'm scared about re: keeping Fields and passing on one of the QB prospects at the top of the draft.  We have a chance to have a great QB cheap for the next 4 years.  It's far from a guarantee in the same way that draft picks never are a guarantee, but you can take one of the better QB prospects of recent years and have him cheap while you build around him (adding onto the investments you've already made in the OL, WR room, etc. and hopefully starting fresh with a new OC).

If he busts, you can always still go back and take shots at QB in the draft.  If you pass and give Fields another year, you aren't likely to have another shot at a QB prospect like one of the top guys this year without spending to move up.

Had a feeling this would be the night the Cowboys opened up a can of whoop ass on a good team.
