Did you mean "broken us though" or 'broken us through' ?

Indy Illini Fan is an interesting character. He claims the likes Sean Miller, Matt "Paint" Painter, Brad Underwood, John Whitman, Bill Self and unnamed B1G assistants as not just sources, but close personal friends that call him for advice. He does not like it when posters disagree with him. His reactions are to either ridicule or ignore. He is never wrong. When he is wrong, he pivots and acts like he knew all along. 0440 usually defers, Lville will disagree with him.

That said, he knows stuff, he is not just parroting the pay sites. He has some contacts.

I do not believe that the angst is based SOLELY on tournament results. The guy has the ass during games. He cannot get a PG, despite all the alleged NIL money.  He has tried his gimmick defense twice and had to abandon it. The offense has looked Weber and Groce-ish at times.

His preferred  primary defense, iirc, would be half court man pressure. The concept, in simple terms, is to put a lot pressure on the ball and force TOs leading to transition offense. Bob Knight, Coach K and others used it at times. It requires the right personnel and depth.

The other gimmick was jump switching screens at all 5 positions.

Are you referring to Illinois Basketball?

Apparently!  PAMan thinks you can just drop any ol' average coach in here and he'll take us from a mediocre non-tournament program to an every year tournament team that wins 70% of their conference games, because We Are Illinois.

If you had to guess, how many three year periods in the last 100 years would you suspect Illinois has won 70% of its conference games?

Doug Mills did it for one three year stretch in the early 1940's.  Harry Combes did it for one three year stretch in his 20 seasons here in the late 40's.  Lou Henson did it for one three year stretch in his 21 seasons here.  Self did it in his three years.  Weber won 80% his first three years.  And Underwood's last three.  That's the whole list.  Five other times in 100 years.

Some of our fans - you at the top of the list - think of Illinois like a Kentucky that just never broke out.  But we've never been Kentucky - we've never even really been close.  The best stretch of Illinois basketball in my life was 96-2005 when we made one E8 and one F4 in a decade.  I bet the best stretch you remember is in the 1980's when we made, you guessed it, one S16, one E8, and one F4 in a decade.  Like, you're in your mid-40's I think, and we've made two Final Fours probably since your parents were born (or close, it was before my parents were born at least).

Five other times in 100 years we've won this much in our league over three years.  If any average coach could do that consistently, all our coaches must have been true disasters.

Tempo is 55!?

Gotta say Wayne, if that's true and the photos I've seen of you are relatively recent, you look great for mid-50's.

We have had multiple chances to break through and be national but something stops us

The  Deon Thomas Bruce Pearl scandal
Self leaving
Weber not breaking through

The CPL boycotts
The slush fund scandal
The Nat Frazier recruits scandal.

Brad said I need money for RayJ … They said okay here’s the coins you asked for, now go get RayJ … And Brad missed … Now they’re all ticked … Lol … If someone took your money and promised to deliver something and didn’t … Would you give them money again and if so would you give as much ?

We aren’t just gonna pay anyone … Brad is stubborn and only wants to go after select PGs … Boosters are already p’d …

It’s just not a good combination … I’d expect no more additions to the roster unless there are some guys who come back from their teams summer tours unhappy with their role and decide to graduate and transfer … Because that will happen … Can we get them ? Idk - depends who it is …

For example from a very generous booster to me:

“I’m tired of doing business with people who I think are way to stubborn, cocky, and continuously don’t deliver on what’s promised AND then they make me pay for a kid to go sit at home half the year??? Pay these kids to go get drunk and not show up against Penn freaking State at home!!!! I don’t continue to want to donate. It was great when we had Ayo, Trent, Damonte, Feliz, Kofi and others but last year I couldn’t stand watching that team and I have a feeling this year isn’t going to be any better especially after everyone gave that money for the Toledo kid Brad couldn’t stop talking about and then he’s making excuses for losing him. And that’s where I’m at with Underwood. He’s got a lot of relationships that need repaired and he hasn’t made an effort. I’ll be putting my money towards football until then.”

We couldn’t “afford” Rayj? Is that what I’m hearing?
"He commented more than once that, 'You know, Hitler did some good things, too,'" Kelly recalled to The Times. Kelly said he would usually quash the conversation by saying "nothing (Hitler) did, you could argue, was good," but that Trump would occasionally bring up the topic again.

Sounds like it but I also think he didn't like he wouldn't be the main guy

So you quoted Indy Illini Fan. Do you believe it?

If the boosters gave BU the money for RayJ, and he didn't spend it; then he still has it to spend? What is the problem?

Or did they just pledge it? In that case, they still have it? Then why are they pissed?

The story does not make sense.

The NIL money pool is murky.
I have no idea what conditions there are and if they miss on a recruit then the money pledged is not contributed or what happens to it.

I did not hear that we didn't have the money to bid on RayJ. It just seemed like he wanted to be at Baylor instead.
Could be as noted to have a larger scoring role, or he believed the track record of Baylor getting players to next level was better, or he preferred Drew over Underwood communication style.

I think that there is a more than usual amount of negative recruiting vs Illinois right now. They just play the UW and Epps tape.

There are at least 6 insiders at Loyalty and they generally don't all agree.

They all seem to agree RayJ's family wanted him at UI. That did not work in our favor this time.

What LK said about negative recruiting.

I wish they would go after Toussaint. Does not sound like we are in the mix.

Hope it all works out. Anxious to see what they look like.
