Because the other option was settling for nothing and getting the same guy.  It REALLY isn't complicated.

It's pretty clear a lot of teams were simply uninterested in Carter, right?  You said you wished we'd traded him to the Falcons, who already had had a chance to pick him and passed (and because of that, didn't have a 1st in this draft to trade either).  A lot of teams were out on him.

I think adding a stud tackle to protect your budding star QB is a good idea, and getting an extra pick for a guy you didn't want anyway is a pretty solid move as well.

Trading down is always the right move especially when rebuilding from the ground up, it starts in the trenches, and I can understand why they wouldn't want an apparent out of shape headcase like Carter.  And the NFL has gone from defense oriented to offense oriented so yeah... offensive tackle is a good place to start when you already have your QB.  Have a good line and the running back doesn't matter as much.  Plenty of good skill players will still be available in later rounds.

Grats to Witherspoon for being a top 5 pick, wow!

The Eagles, being an already good team have the luxury of taking a chance on a guy like Carter... its really that simple

I used the Falcons as a random example as in "team X." I think I also said the Jets. Another "team X." Meaning not the Eagles, who are already the best team in the NFC for the foreseeable future.

The point was letting a bad NFC team or an AFC team have him for a day 3 pick would "taste better."

Yes, the Falcons were a terrible example.

I suspect if the Jets were willing to offer more to move into the spot, the Bears would've taken it.  I sincerely doubt they just passed on the best offer they got and took a worse offer for funsies.

Would you have felt better trading the pick to the Jets for a lower first round pick this year and a lower pick next year?  Personally I'm worried about the assets the Bears have, not whether we're making a super bowl contender better the year after being the worst team in the league.

I don't find anything "objectionable" there. Again I just feel like there was more value to be had re: Carter. Maybe there wasn't. I'm confident Poles isn't inept enough not to have not tested the waters on a Carter trade down weeks or days ago. I do think it's a bad look when you just made the best team in your conference better for a day 3 pick. As I said, the more I've thought about it, it makes me think Poles was on the Darnell Wright no matter what train.

I still give the Bears a passing grade on the day. Just think it could have been better. Perhaps I'm wrong.

I also think it's kind of funny to assume the Eagles are the best team in the NFC for the 'foreseeable future'.  My guess is you wouldn't have agreed with that even one year ago today.  Things change fast.

Yes, but you can only make a trade with teams that also want to make the trade

Again, they could've not made the trade.  The result is the Eagles still get Carter, and the Bears have one less pick next year.

They also could've picked Carter.  The result of that is, the Bears spent their best draft asset on a player they didn't even want.

I fail to see how either of these options is better than what they did.
