Expecting any sort of consistency or good defense from freshman isn't very realistic.  The teams that smoked us were stocked with grown ass men on them.

I'm far more annoyed with the play of our veterans.  (the few that we have)

It's an epic pic.  Have just decided to buy this pic for my Christmas present.  Will hold off on the lizard skin shoes.

I’ve also noticed a trend over the past few games. Anybody that Skyy Clark is guarding is just backing him down and getting east layup and shots right at the rim. It’s a well known isolation teams have been using against him/us.

I rewatched the game.  Skyy Clark can’t guard anyone. He’s way too slow to defend high major D1 guards.  He also looks overweight. He’s shaped like a rectangle.  And you can’t claim it’s due to age why he’s struggling.  Plenty of freshman PGs will flash if they have talent. Curbelo certainly did. Skyy Clark shows nothing.  I may have been overly optimistic in even comparing him to Mark Smith.

No clue what Nichi was watching trying to claim this guy was good off some preseason clip. His HS tape doesn’t lie and it’s why Kentucky cut him loose. He’s not a high major D1 player.  He doesn’t flash any high major skill. He can’t create for anyone on offense, and can’t guard on defense.  He can dribble and has a good shooting form.  That’s it. Not enough.  At least with Harris on the floor you get defensive value and a high major D1 athlete.

Which ever Illini Guardian paid for Clark needs their money back.

Epps I think can still be a functional player. Dainja is functional.  Harris should develop into a very good player.

Rodgers & Clark need to hit the Oregon Trail.

I didn't watch the misery game. Someone said the problem Skyy Clark had on defense was when he switched off on a taller player.

His recruiting coach left UK. They have loads of guard depth. He asked for and was granted a release.  Nothing to see there.

The knee is fine. He may not be dunking from the free throw line yet, but the athleticism is mostly back. His problems are over thinking, being tentative, learning defense, frustration-- normal freshman issues. Add in perhaps not fully trusting the knee. And, yes, he has excellent basic basketball skills.

Rodgers is a stud athlete with ball handling and passing skills. Also rebounds, scores in the paint,  and plays defense.  Can't shoot beyond midrange and so far has he has looked completely lost. Heard he played well against Misery.

Btw, prior to the head injury, Curbelo did more than flash talent. He was B1G 6th man of the year. He has some unique skills and I am sure most of us hope he recovers and has a great career.

Some seem to get a surreptitious joy in seeing others fail. I admit to a little schadenfreude when IU, Michigan, or Iowa lose.

Nope. After players leave Illinois, they can go fuck themselves. I honestly don’t care about them anymore. I mean, I don’t really care that much about them anyway. It’s not like they’re friends or family.

vs

big thing that stands out to me is about 2APG and 1SPG less but 1RPG more

if we actually ran the ball through him (or had some better 3pt shooters) I am confident he could up those numbers, but his defense sucks and like the other player, really needs to lose some weight

Curbelo is just doing Curbelo at St. John's.

He had a good run for us for the last part of his freshmen year. He was a fckign hot mess before then.
He gets a pass on last year.

This year he has had 4 or more TO's in half of his games. Still has no perimeter jumper. Can be very good at times, but most times it is a crapshoot.
Pretty much how he was as frosh for us.
He is still pretty much a net zero on the risk/reward metric. His KenPom OFF rating is below 100 (that is not good in case you were counting).
Hawkins is about the same and also under 100. For every good play they make a shit play or bad shot is around the corner.

I will say that if he was here this year we would not be running the offense through Hawkins which should have been shit canned long ago.
I think UW thinks he was protecting the Freshmen PG's and bringing them along slowly, but it has fucked up our offense movement, and they likely are thinking WTF is going on.
They get brought in to play lead guard and they get stuck on the wing watching a giraffe trip over himself and cough it up.

Good try, but the Oregon Trail was Lewis and Clark. You might be thinking of George Rogers Clark, who surprised some natives at Vincennes.
I am a former 5-star general. Or maybe it was 4-star.
Nichi claims a guard with a 1.3 assist-to-TO ratio is a good passer.

Curbelo is having a perfectly good season for a junior lead guard on a lower P5 team. He's not making us any better this year. The only thing that changes is he absorbs like 3 of our turnovers and siphons off 2-8 from 3.

More like inconvenient. I didn't watch the UVA, Cuse, TX games either.
