Doge takeover of social security seemed ‘based on myth’, says ex-senior official
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/mar/10/elon-musk-doge-social-securityAt various times Doge has reportedly cited elderly people well over 100, people with no SSN, and children getting benefits. Also, multiple people getting benefits with the same number.
Most of this just shows that Elon Musks weren't properly trained for the task.
Previously it was thought the old people issue had to do with outdated computers. Apparently, that might be part of it.
Mainly, it seems SSA maintains a full list of everyone who has or ever had a SSN. When someone does, a death date is entered. This moves them.to.a deceased list.
DOGE obtained a list of everyone with an active number, a number without a date of death. Note this would not necessarily mean they are currently, have ever been, or will ever be receiving benefits. This is one of things Doge failed to grasp.
This included a number of people, mostly born before 1920, with no recorded date of death. DOGE mistakenly believed benefits were still be payed on all those numbers. It appears SSA was notified these people had died, but for whatever reason, the date of death was never recorded in the electronic data base.
The multiple people receiving benefits originating from one number is common. It has to with family and survivor benefits. M
