What we get into here is a really sad human condition. People who think they can get along fine without things X/Y/Z that they think are "wasteful", but if really put into a position where they'd need to take care of themselves, they'd be dead in a day. If Elon Musk were on the LOST island, he'd be dead in a day, either through incompetence or at the hands of the other castaways.
All these things that "just work", when they stop working... I mean Custard can cook a mean meal on the grill, so he doesn't need a restaurant, but he's not going out and hunting wild boar with bullets that he packed himself with gunpowder that he crafted himself, cleaning the boar, stuffing the sausages, curing them.
My cousin can do a pretty mean job of butchering an elk. But he can't forge his own knives, and if his water stopped running it would be a pretty big mess. And he'd be eating a lot of elk jerky if his freezer wasn't running, of course he makes jerky himself in a dehydrator, and uses salt that he gets from the grocery store, etc...
