This would be super funny that a project that would have been nominally useful pre-COVID finally gets the green light post COVID when it's far less useful. For every CEO who wants to crack the whip and get people into the office "because personal interaction" there are 10 who look at the rents they were paying for a downtown office and are like "screw this". And if employees can leave expensive metros and companies can pay lower salaries that employees are willing to take for a reduced cost of living, all the better.

Even if you have a lease you can't get out of, it's still cheaper to shut it down, and pay less in utilities, security, etc... have your workers be more productive if the commute time can be leveraged, and as mentioned, let them move to wherever (or do your hiring from wherever) and save on salary.

Conveniently omits that other cities are close to normal whereas the cities where this is still a major issue are those following "progressive" i.e., lax on crime, etc., policies.
