I really wasn't following this, one thing that puzzles me, it's not like this is the US Open. Doesn't seem like Penn was under any requirement to put this swimmer on the squad.... and I hear discussion that the other Penn swimmers were unhappy, what does that imply about the coach's ability to foster morale...

It says the coach's hands were tied and the swimmers may have considered their position on the team in jeopardy if they spoke out. And rightly so.
Thomas was a low ranked male swimmer. Like real low.
And blowing away the field in women's events.

So now you’re blaming the coach?! He’d be crucified if he said no by all the PC crowd and/or lose his job. Other swimmers could be afraid to speak out too.

So I don't necessarily think it's right to let someone who went through full male puberty compete against born females, but the issue would be resolved within half a generation if we encouraged and supported trans kids to self-identify early and take appropriate medication. Oddly the people who bitch the loudest about the purity of women's sports also seem to support things like the Texas law that treats contemporary psychiatric care as child abuse. No one is changing their damn gender just to win a 3rd tier college sport. I'll be willing to buy that argument when dudes are faux transitioning to play pro women's sports, but that would require women's sports to be well-paid.

Really?

I knew more than a few people at UIUC who tried to walk on for various teams and were told no. This kid wasn't recruited or signed for the women's swim team. Obviously my friends were clearly not very good, and this kid definitely had the times to dominate, but I still don't see any reason a coach is required to take any student athlete.

And the VaTech swimmer, Reka Gyorgy, essentially said the same thing. Standing by and supporting a person's right to be the person they feel the need to be is an entirely different matter than disagreeing with the NCAA allowing biological males to infringe upon the opportunities of biological women.
Reka Gyorgy stated she supports Lia Thomas.

By no means should that be equated to supporting the NCAA position on the matter. The Twitter apparently didnt take too kindly to Reka expressing some thoughts. Reka Gyorgy will be graduating and looking to join the work force. Good luck with that.
