Moreover, the partisan divide is wider for this idea than for any other police reform proposal: 5% of Republicans support it, compared with 78% of Democrats and 46% of independents.

99% of Americans lack any perspective as to whether police budgets are right sized to begin with.

It's bizarre. If the cops ask for more money, the answer just seems to be "yes" with nobody ever asking the question "what is the appropriate amount of money to put into policing". Policing is important! So it must just need more money!

So if you ask the question "are we spending more than we need to on policing" some people just freak out, whereas the exact opposite always seems to be the case with schools.

As a concrete example of what Murph is talking about, CPD's budget earmarks $1.5B for personnel costs.

CPD has 14k employees, so you're talking about ~107k/employee, which seems excessive, but I have no idea how discretionary or amendable that number is. If we cut it to $1B, is that 14k at $71k/employee or are we slashing CPD to 9500 employees, and what does the latter mean on the street level and in terms of response times or serious crime investigation and prosecution? I have no idea.

Personnel costs are way over half the police budgets in these places. I'm appalled that CPD pays out $50-100M in settlements and legal fees every year, but it's a drop in the bucket and can also be somewhat mitigated with insurance schemes. Ditto equipment; it's a truism that they get shiny new stuff in part b/c it's indirect kickbacks to companies that have relative monopolies and love to support local politicians (compared with, say, the low bidder for providing school lunches with potatoes), but it's not much compared to the personnel costs.

More like the people who want to keep the cops are like "without cops, everyone will just commit all sorts of crimes!" - because that's what they would do if they could get away with it.

I guess I'm Extra Woke because I wrote about this stuff in 2009!

We need to move (some!) policing responsibilities from gun-carriers to Quality of Life advocates, and social workers.

It's not that hard, or radical. Most municipalities already figured out that they need a special officer for animal control.

On Wednesday night, a riot was declared at the Portland Police Bureau location on the 700 block of Southeast 106th Avenue.

Doors were broken, projectiles and fireworks were thrown at officers and rioters disabled security cameras. Tear gas and crowd control munitions were used by police to disperse the crowd.

“I believe that city staff could have died last night. I cannot and I will not tolerate that. This is not peaceful protests. This is not advocacy to advance reforms,” Wheeler said."

Springfield Public Schools officials said they hope students approach online classes the same way they would attending classes in person and that means following a dress code that also bars hoods, sunglasses and bandannas, among other things. The district said students should also be "sitting up out of bed preferably at a desk or table" during remote learning, according to its school manual.

"The expectation is that the dress code is upheld," Jason Wind, director of school support, recently told school board members. "We don't need students in pajamas and all those other things while on their Zoom conferences."

Woke up this morning to see the Trump campaign rally they held last night on Fucking scUM Avenue (Edit: Mag Mile). Seriously, stuff like this is going to help Trump get re-elected 10x more than a bunch of maskless idiots in a stadium mouth breathing COVID all over each other ever will.
