Are there any Belgian military bases in the U.S.?
Wanting America to be better is not America-hating, it’s patriotism.

That's been an issue, hasn't it?

Tempo answered the question. the United States has subsidized military spending for NATO because we wanted to; we wanted to dominate. During the Cold War we had lots of bases in Europe. Over 100? We still have 40ish.

Federal tax revenue in the United States has averaged around 16% of gdp since 1945. Include state and local, the number is around 25%.  We spend about 3.5% on military.

In Denmark, about 44% of gdp goes to tax revenue. Until recently, they were only spending about 1.5% on military, less than an agreed upon target of 2%..

According to a common talking point on conservative media, the only reason they can afford generous welfare benefits is because we pay for their defense.

I've never seen anyone say this. I have seen the part about not spending the agreed upon expenditure tho.

And Presidents, even Obama, bitched about how they were not spending as they were supposed to. The free ride has ended. I'll give Trump credit for that.

If they let us build a US Military base in their country on land they could otherwise use - especially naval bases with deepwater port access - it’s not “free” for them

44% of Denmark's gdp already goes to taxes. Do you honestly believe shifting .5% to military spending would have somehow crippled their social welfare programs?

Apparently. Because, if not, they would be doing what they were obligated to do for decades.

Woke AI perspective

The United States subsidizes NATO and maintains bases to ensure European security, deter adversaries (particularly Russia), and maintain global stability. By paying a larger share, the U.S. secures influence over alliance decision-making, protects trade, maintains a forward defense posture, and prevents regional conflicts that could drag it into larger wars.

.Key Reasons for U.S. Funding & Bases:

*European Deterrence Initiative (EDI): The U.S. invests billions to enhance the readiness of its forces and NATO allies to respond rapidly to regional aggression.

*Strategic Military Presence: Bases in countries like Germany, Poland, and Spain allow the U.S. to project power rapidly, maintain logistical capabilities, and operate in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

*Burden Sharing Imbalance: The U.S. has historically contributed roughly 70% of total NATO defense spending, partly due to European allies missing the 2% GDP target for defense, prompting [petty] concerns regarding "free-riding".

*Common Funding: The U.S. provides substantial direct funding (e.g., 40% of the cost for NATO Airborne Early Warning Control) to support shared capabilities like air defense and command structures.

*Political Stability & Security: By funding these structures, the U.S. ensures that allies, who might otherwise have lower defense budgets, remain secure, preventing a return to the instability that caused the 20th century's massive world wars.

While recent trends show European allies increasing their contributions—with all allies expected to meet or exceed the 2% goal in 2025—the U.S. still holds the largest monetary role, partly to ensure NATO remains a strong, U.S.-aligned alliance.

AI review

NATO members committed in 2014 to spend at least 2% of their GDP on defense by 2024 to ensure military readiness. As of 2026, all NATO allies have met or exceeded this 2% target. The guideline was established to strengthen collective defense against threats like Russian aggression, with many members also investing in major equipment.

Key Aspects of the 2% Commitment:

*Target Status: By 2026, all 32 NATO member states reached the 2% goal, up from only three in 2014.

*2014 Wales Pledge: Members agreed to move towards 2% within a decade in response to Russia's annexation of Crimea.

*Not Legally Binding: The target is a political guideline for military capacity rather than a strictly binding treaty obligation.

*Spending Requirements: At least 20% of this expenditure should be on major equipment, research, and development.

*Highest Spenders: The United States historically spends the most, with Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia also investing heavily in their defense.

Future Commitments:
NATO members have committed to new, higher targets, with a pledge to spend 3.5% on defense by 2035, including spending on critical infrastructure and security.

At some point, reason and logic matter.

Like having a US base in your backyard is a deterrent so you feel safe despite not living up to your obligations.

The obligation was to reach 2% by 2024. Most made it. All are there now. Their social programs seem to be intact..
