I agree with Harris on this. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. We keep defunding programs that prevent crime, and defending police funding.

You can bet Trump will take it out of context and use it against her. Then we have another mindless argument over semantics.

Defund the Police is a clever slogan if you are preaching to the choir. Social workers  and educators get it.

When this was going on, homicide detectives in St. Louis were griping about their heavy case load. As I recall, they were being forced to work 2 open cases at a time.

I recall reading the average case load for a social worker in that area. Don't remember the number, but it was a lot.

We just saw another example of horrible policing in Springfield. Horrible for the victim and her family. Horrible for the grossly unqualified police officer who killed her, and whoever the phuck hired him. The woman needed help, not a bullet to the face.

Where is the right wing screaming self defense on this one?

I wonder if there is any correlation between demonizing/defunding/declawing law enforcement and hiring grossly unqualified police officers? Who the fuck wants that job post-Ferguson? It’s not an entirely different situation than urban educators and social workers. Relatively low paying, difficult jobs where you’re mostly unappreciated and become a target for a lot of misplaced anger. Add in the fact that police work is also dangerous, and it’s not a winning situation. So they keep lowering standards and training and this is what you end up with—the bottom of the barrel.

Ray often talks about how Republicans undermine quality Democrat social policy by not backing them and then screaming failure when it doesn’t work. Law enforcement in 2024 isn’t much different, although I understand you immediately gain moral high ground on the internet for shitting all over cops.

I'm skeptical that Chicago cops are underpaid, but the question why anyone would want to be a cop or a teacher anywhere is a good one.

The right redefined welfare programs that helped people as throwing money at problems. As Custard reminds us, they do like to sabotage programs, then say, see, government doesn't work. Except when they throw money at failed law enforcement.

55k starting salary in a fairly expensive cold weather city that’s increasingly anti-police isn’t great. It’s quite a catch-22 wanting to keep the police budget low and attract top talent. Same can be said for education and social workers, obviously.

For some reason I thought they had increased the salary (or maybe added signing bonuses), because recruiting was an issue.

From CPD website:  Officers receive a competitive starting salary of $54,672 that increases to $82,458 annually after just 18 months.

One guy from the fraternity ended up being a Chicago cop, one guy went to that guys bachelor party. I think his experience that night would hint that you are correct.

Guess the other perk is that you can get very blasted at your bachelor party, wrap your car around a light pole, and the responding officer will find a way to designate it a hit and run so not only do you not end up being charged, your car is taken care of via uninsured motorist coverage.
