Once upon a time, I liked the concept of a national sales tax to replace the income and payroll taxes. Not the euro style valued added tax. A point of sale, retail sales tax. It struck me as a very efficient way to collect revenue. Plus it would reward work, encourage savings, and check inflation. I also knew, like the flat tax, it had no chance, and looked way too much like a not so sneaky way to shift the tax burden away from the relatively wealthy.

1) Is your assertion that crime goes down in winter researched, or just something you made up?
2) Did you even go to the source and see if the reduction in crime was compared to the previous summer, or for this winter compared to last winter, eliminating this supposed seasonality?

According to the report, so far this year in Chicago there have been 32 murders, 113 criminal sexual assaults, 648 robberies. 348 instances of aggravated battery, 489 burglaries, 1045 instances of theft and 2169 instances of motor vehicle theft.

"Each of these recorded stats is higher compared to the same time last year according to the police department. In 2022 a total of 3013 crimes were committed compared with 2023's 4844."

Our house was broken into in Jan 2022. In Jan 2023, it was not. Ergo, 100% decrease in crime.

The OP was not using stats limited to Cook County.

I certainly wasn't using some report comparing Chicago in January 2023 with January 2022 to show a national trend.

Here is a hint. The FBI released stats for 2021 last October.

A think tank recently released some kind of report for major cities for 2022.

We can argue the reliability of the FBI stats since 1/3 or more are estimated. Some things are up a little, others are down. What we have shows an overall downward trend, especially in violent crimes; which is what increased during the pandemic.
