Tempo related side note. That temple is almost certainly located at Randall and Sullivan Roads on the northwest side of Aurora. My childhood dog is buried underneath that temple.

That land used to house a farm that belonged to my great-uncle Steve. He lived to be 91 and never married, so no heirs. My grandparents lived in that 7 bedroom farmhouse for probably close to 40 years. My grandmother took care of her uncle the last 35+ years of his life. He died around 1980 and the farm sold a couple/three years later.

I lived on that farm where the temple stands my sophomore year of high school after my parents divorced. A lot of memories there. I’d give just about anything to drive up the gravel lane and visit the farmhouse one more time.

Across the street where the Illinois Math and Science Academy and Aurora Central Catholic High schools sit was my great-grandfather’s farm. He and his brother had adjacent farms there in Aurora. My mother’s family came from Luxembourg in the 1870s and farmed those lands for four generations.


Awesome story, thanks for sharing. Can’t imagine our fourth generation family farm being gobbled up by suburbia, it would hurt. Hopefully they got a pretty penny for it when they sold.

Thank you. Yeah, it was tough seeing the land sold even as a teenager. Outside of my mom’s cousin Johnny my great-uncles were the last to farm. And Johnny gave it up years ago when he was young. I think he’s in the Philippines now with his wife.

Uncle Steve was my great-great uncle. Remember him pretty well. He was late 80s early 90s and he’d spend most of the day in his lazy boy in the corner napping, smoking his pipe, or reading. If you wanted to talk to him you basically had to yell as he was hard of hearing from years of being on tractors.

Another story I only learned recently. As I said, Uncle Steve never married. Apparently my great-grandmother was the love of his life, but she married my great-grandfather instead, so Uncle Steve never married.

One last thing. And a regret. Originally when my parents divorced I went to live in Tennessee. I wasn’t crazy about it there, so I came back home to Illinois to be with my mom. I used to write letters to my grandma and grandpa while I was gone. I learned after he passed that Uncle Steve would read those letters, and it breaks my heart that I’m 99.9% sure I didn’t include his name in the greetings. Never dawned on me he was reading them.

I actually have one more pretty good farm story. My mother was the oldest grandchild and was very close with my great-grandparents spending considerable time with them growing up.

My great-grandfather was a pretty successful farmer. He used to raise quarter horses and ponies (shetlands I think). Anyway, when my mother was about 9 years old she had a friend over at the farm. Her friend left the gate to the ponies open and 150 someodd ponies got loose and were running down Indian Trail (a road in Aurora where I grew up). My great-grandfather just happened to be driving a tractor back from Uncle Steve’s farm across the road.

He started making loud noises with the tractor and every last pony ran back to the pen! Seeing 150-200 ponies running down the road had to be quite a sight, even the early 50s!
