We know nationalism is bad. What’s gotten problematic is what now constitutes nationalism in the minds of the political left. When asking for reasonable execution of our border laws/security is racist white nationalism, we have an issue.

Ahh yes, the “they’re too dumb to understand” argument.

Spin it all you want, but the rise of the far right is in direct response to the rise of the far left, the failure to enforce basic border policy, and the wholesale rejection of woke progressive bullshit.

Dunno. A huge chunk of Democratic politicians at a high level, and a decent amount of Republicans, probably consider universal healthcare an appropriate step, but saying so will get you nowhere fast.

We have "universal roads", "universal police", "universal fire departments". Health care shouldn't be any different, it would be so much more efficient and net out a huge positive for society writ large. It would be an economic negative on tax day for 10% or so of the population, but a huge win for them when they have lower employee absenteeism, customers with more money, etc... (unless you own a pharma company that sells curative medicine, since universal health care would prevent the need for those medicines on average).

It's tied to the rise of populism (popularism); which is also a rejection of elitism (expertism).

The Internet and cell phones are factors.

Everyone is a journalist, a photographer, and a researcher.

We the people have instant access to lots of information, most of which is useless writing Illini type bs.

People, intelligent people, are still pushing the 9/11 nonsense.

Rebellion against and distrust of traditional authority is part of it. That might be why anti-elitism/ populism is very popular, but right wing authority is not.

In Europe, traditional liberal democracy and social democracy are still highly valued. Less so here?

Xenophobia is a factor too, but not deeply rooted. Most people don't see immigrants as a problem in their own communities, but they see it as a macro-problem.

I would rather say there if good elitism and bad elitism. The good being earned and based on qualifications. The bad being inherited and / or based on wealth.

If the elites are idiots; then the people are going to lose respect for authority and expertise.
