I don’t really think about it that much either. My grandparents did live through the depression and always stressed the importance of having a reasonable stockpile of basics. You just don’t know.
We got hit by a tornado in April. Went 250 or so yards behind us. No structural damage but power was out for days, roadways were closed due to trees falling over them, and cell service was out for a long time as well. In a few violent minutes we were basically sent back in time 100+ years.
Most modern humans are spoiled and unprepared for even the slightest inconvenience, let alone a disaster.
In the noted societal upheaval - the power stays out forever, the trees do not get moved from the roads, which would be meaningless anyway because there is no gasoline, and there will be no cell service.
If you know you can just walk over the downed trees and a friendly first responder will take you to town and get you a hotel and hot meal, that FEMA will bring in more supplies and help with money for reconstruction - you haven't gone back in time 100+ years.
What you described is "like we went camping out in the woods"
