This is the kind of shit that happens when you have too many well fed people who are bored af
Yep.

This obsessive need to morally “purify” everything is stupid. I understand if you want to boycott a living person because they have said or done things you disagree with. But applying modern standards to the past is absurd. There are people who think Abraham Lincoln was not sufficiently anti-racist to be celebrated.

I’m all in favor of tearing down statues of people who were famous for doing racist things like rebelling against their own country for the right to own other people. But to “cancel” people who did great things worth celebrating simply because they don’t meet an impossible moral purity test is insane.

I’d imagine they were under pressure to do so and wanted to stay ahead of it. I understand the African dudes at the zoo being way over the top but not sure about the Asian with the pointy hat eating bowl of rice with chopsticks. Should I, being German, be offended by the image of a blonde man in lederhosen drinking from a beer stein?  I get that people are sensitive to what they view as stereotypical imagery but where do we draw the line?  Or does my opinion even matter given I’m white? Denigrating/mocking/making fun of a culture is bad. If a person makes an illustration to demonstrate how another person looks, WGAF? Lots of people in Asia still wear pointy hats and eat rice from bowls with chopsticks. If I moved to Asia and saw a kids book about Americans that had a dude in jeans and a flannel shirt and boots eating a cheeseburger it wouldn’t bother me a bit.

Obviously, poor taste.

Is that what they are calling it these days?

Would you, being German, be offended by the image of a blonde man in an SS Uniform smiling an evil laugh as he turns the gas chamber on?

The analogy isn't completely apt, more to the point had Coronavirus originated in Berlin, Trump would not be calling it the "Berlin Virus" or the "Nazi Flu". Stereotypical imagery of a power class doesn't result in discrimination like it does with a class that is targeted. Go watch Jeremy Lin's presser.

I think the offensive images in the Dr. Suess books could have been removed or tweaked.   Back in the 60s, Disney removed the racist caricature in the Pastoral sequence of Fantasia.  The Three Little Pigs scene, in which the wolf was portrayed as a Jewish peddler, was also later reanimated.

For whatever reason, the foundation established for all things Suess chose not to revise the books.  We will have to deal with it.  Maybe we can all memorize the “canceled” books to keep them alive.   Because I don’t want to pay an exorbitant price for them on eBay.

And I miss those “flesh” Crayola crayons from the 50s.

If they depict some guy from Chicago wearing a scully and eating catsup on a hot dog; that's gotta go!

Interesting that this hullaballoo over Dr Seuss is so noisy - but Song of the South is not really a thing other than the ride at Disney, and Disney is removing the Bre'r etc characters and Zip-a-dee-do-dah from that ride and retooling it around a newer film.

But they haven't retooled It's a Small World - the Asian characters in that ride would look at Dr Seuss and say "hold my beer"

Loved the Indian canoes, the burning settler’s cabin, the gun turrets at Fort Wilderness and exploring Injun Joe’s Cave on Tom Sawyer Island.   That island was built just for fun.

Someone hasn’t read the Cat in the Hat Comes Back, Horton Hears a Who!, or The Lorax.

I'm surprised CPAC didn't have a whole segment on the only Seuss book that should be banned is The Lorax

Is that what they are calling it these days?

First, I did not hear it. My gut reaction was poor taste. Upon further review, I'd say possibly valid satire.

During the Obama years I followed some  Buddhist groups from yahoo to facebook.  I was one of the  token conservative when politics came up. Eventually got involved in some quasi-political groups. At first, I tended to find the tactics of both sides distasteful. It was not long before I found the so-called conservatives far worse. I don't recall anyone citing Rush. It was Alex Jones,  Stefan Molyneux,  Wayne Madsen, Charles C. Johnson  -- the ilk Rush once labeled as KooKs.  The crap I saw about Obama was brutally nasty, false, and malicious -- far worse than a magical negro parody piece. They even edited his speeches and quotes from his books to change the meaning. The fake news they spread about Michelle Obama and Valerie Jarrett was just as bad.
