Does anyone have any guidance on disposing of Dr Seuss books ?
Asking for a neighbor. They dont want to recycle racism and the trash pickup person is a person of color sometimes.
Are all the books racist ?
My neighbor is concerned and now horrified that the kids have veen reading racist propaganda.
Thankfully, the kids seem ok to me. But they havent been told yet.

I think it’s six books.   The decision was apparently made by Dr. Seuss Enterprises, a company formed by the Seuss family.

If any of your neighbor’s books are on the list, send them my way.   Our community is having a book burning event.   AOC is the featured speaker.

Also, an interesting take on the decision:
"If curtailing racist imagery in Dr. Seuss is ‘cancel culture,’ what, exactly, is your culture?"

Good point:

"... Polish Americans are no longer associated closely with Eastern European immigration, which was to the United States a century ago what immigration from Central America is today. Polish people were targets of discrimination and seen as something other than White, Western Europeans. Over time, that perception faded and the jokes went from discriminatory insults to hurtful anachronisms."

Except Polish jokes faded away on their own; with no need for liberal thought police to cancel the culture.

Bottom line for me on Rush Limbaugh. I disagreed some with his political positions all along, and strongly disagreed with his later alignment with Trump.

I found some of his satire inappropriate, not because he punched the wrong direction, but because it was based on false premises.

While I think he was wrong much of the time, even very wrong at times,  I don't think he was evil or despicable. Backing  Trump's campaign to reverse the election approached despicableness, but the man was dying of cancer ...

I think his critics got some things wrong, such as taking sarcastic humor literally and (in some cases deliberately) missing the point of "dittoes."

Ask Drew Carey and Jimmy Kimmel about that "liberal thought police" group, the Anti-Bigotry Committee of the Polish American Congress.

 I did not know this:

"The perceived damage to the ethnic group can be of great concern as when the ethnic Polish jokes became so common in the 1970s the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs approached the U.S. State Department to complain."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethnic_joke

In my experience, the Polish jokes were recycled as blonde jokes.

Racial jokes were common during  the early to mid-1980s.

The Jewish, Italian and Irish jokes I heard were largely self-deprecating.

I guess humor is like a double edged sword. The old laughing at / laughing with distinction might be useful. Also the throw the baby out with the bathwater analogy could be apt.

There are indeed people who want to “cancel” Dr. Seuss though. Not just the 6 books in question.

The Cat in the Hat was allegedly based on an African American woman performer, and there are even people who think that the white kids wanting the black cat out of their house is supposed to be a racist metaphor. It won’t be long before that one is gone too.

They are coming for Dr. Seuss. There are people who will not rest until his works are excised from all public education in this country. Just watch.

They didn't fade away, like MIC and Dago jokes, they were just replaced with the next target.

My bottom line is this.

When George HW Bush lost to Clinton - note that Clinton only got 43% of the popular vote - it wasn't followed by a riot storming the Capitol.

I will go with "A riot storming the Capitol" is a bad thing, along with all the craziness going on at a micro level. So the question for the reader is, how the hell did we get from 1992 to 2020?

Rush Limbaugh played a very significant role in that process, as someone who had an audience of 15 million listeners daily, intersecting directly with the population of crazies.

Ross Perot Reform Party started it with his xenophobic Reform Party. Rush made fun of them, called them KooKs. Next came the Tea Party. I was not really following politics at that point; much less listening to Rush. My impression is it was propelled by the election of Obama. I think Sean Hannity and Glenn Beck were vocal Tea Party supporters. No idea where Rush stood.  Did he support KooKy nonsense like birtherism? If so, he became a parody of himself sooner than I knew.

This is surprising: "Although his Democratic critics derided Limbaugh listeners as uneducated and easily led, a study by the Pew Research Center found that Dittoheads were on average better informed than listeners of NPR and were more likely than public radio or C-SPAN audiences to have college degrees."  ~~  https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/obituaries/rush-limbaugh-dead/2021/02/17/61bacd24-e04b-11e7-8679-a9728984779c_story.html

Again, dittos was simply shorthand for thanks for taking my call, love your show, you are equal time, etc. Did not mean they agreed with everything. 'I'll tell what to think, don't try this at home, ..." was satire.

Weeks after radio personality Rush Limbaugh began airing a parody song, “Barack, the Magic Negro,” about Sen. Barack Obama’s popularity with many white voters, it is drawing fire from critics who say it is racist.

The audio clip features a comedian imitating the singing voice of the Rev. Al Sharpton, bemoaning Obama’s popularity with whites who will, the lyrics predict, “vote for him and not for me ’cause he’s not from da hood.”

Obviously, poor taste.

One area I used to clash with fellow conservatives was on immigration. They would argue that "our" ancestors came here from Europe to assimilate. That's nonsense. They had their own language and culture and intended to keep it. In some cases, they came here to preserve their culture. In most cases, it was for land and economic opportunity. They built ethnic communities that would add flavor to American culture as they gradually assimilated. Meanwhile, they were  subjects of discrimination and butts of ethnic humor.

What if they just went after IlliniCalvin?

Also, wasn't it "Dr. Seuss Co." that made the decision regarding the 6 books?
