You can't do that, Mn! That would be too much like Conrad Dobler!
Odd. I usually hear "he got his bell rung", not "he got Conrad Doblered".

He has turned in consistent tournament teams (three in a row now) and you're calling him Underachiever - so apologies for not really buying that.

Your argument hinges literally on one game.  I'll take the multiple year sample size, especially given what this program was like when he got here.  It's like you forgot.

I didn't forget anything. I remember exacty what it was like when he got here. But I also remember what the program was like when Lou Henson was around and pre-Weber.

The coaching in that one game was malpractice.  Being a "consistent tournament team" is not really some a great achievement in the grand scheme of things or for Illinois basketball. It should be a "given" at Illinois. Late Weber, Groce, blah blah blah consistently missing the tourney are (or should be) the anomoly.  Getting there is not really an achievement. Ask Bill Self.

I am still waiting for a multiple year sample size with multiple tournament wins.

Seems pretty likely you'll move the goalposts then like you just did.

Anyway, Underwood has been about as good as anyone could've expected here.  He turned us from a team that hadn't made two tournaments in a row in over a decade to one of the top teams in one of the top conferences in America.  Other than a small group of morons, everyone sees what's right in front of their faces.  He's done a fantastic job, is recruiting well, etc.  The tournament wins will come if he keeps winning at the pace he's been winning.  There's nothing to whine about, but don't let that stop you.  Just unreal after the stretch we had in the decade plus before he got here that people would be whining about the last three seasons.

So, so dumb.

One sure fire way to make sure we never get to the place we both want us to get to is to turn on coaches as soon as they turn our program around.

There have only been three tournaments played since we got Underwood.  We missed the first two during the rebuild, and got a one seed before being upset by an underserved team in the third one.  We could’ve gone deeper last year for sure but other than that single loss, have the results really been worse than you expected?

No one said to sucker punch anyone except you. A hard foul to send a message is fine.

What’s the message? That we’re gooons? One hard foul was going to erase a 15-20 deficit? You’re talking a lot of dumb right now.

And boom goes the dynamite.

The fact that you think a good program has been better than us in the last decade or so is “dynamite” pretty much says it all.

We’re in better shape than Wisconsin right now.

There's a mile-wide gap between "lionizing Underwood for merely being competent" and pushing back on idiots saying the guy who turned our program around quickly is 'underachieving' because of one tournament game.

And in an unintended way, you’ve literally summarized the foolishness of PAMan’s discontent. It was literally ONE tournament game. We didn’t even get a chance to compete when we had our first legit team in 10+ years.

Throw out Underwood’s first couple of years (realistically you had to give him time to eight the ship). Our first good year, the tournament is canceled. So PAMan is roasting Underwood (after very successfully turning the program around) based on one (albeit ir pretty rough) loss to a woefully underseeded Loyola team.

I would kind of consider myself the bar. If even I can admit Underwood has done an excellent job, you’d have to be an extreme nutjob not to appreciate what he’s done.

Unfortunately too many Illinois fans deserved Weber. No one gives a shit who wins B1G Championships. People remember losing to ND, Austin Peay and Michigan, NC, and fucking Loyola in the Tournament.

lol this is such a bad take

If he can turn in some consistent tournament teams, I will gladly say I was an idiot. In light of what we have seen, I am waiting for some good tourney results before I jump on board.

Yes, losing in the 2nd round as a 1 seed was an epic nut punch. But when is the last time we’ve had Illinois talked about as a national title contender, in back to back years no less? Outside of that one game, it’s damn near a miracle what Undwrwood has done here. We were completely irrelevant when he took over. Not even relevant enough to make fun of outside our own fan base.

For a 1 seed with Ayo? Yes.

Say whatever you want Spark. But it is true. In 2005 I was at the Final Four. I bought a 6-pack of Dirt Cheep branded beer. I joked that I was not going to drink it until Illinois won the NC. Over 16 years later, 5 of the cans got holes, busted when frozen, etc. and there is only a single can left in the beer fridge. Waiting to be consumed. Yet, I may never drink that can of Dirt Cheep beer because Illini fans, and the loser AD, are happy with fucking B1G Championships and just making a 64-team tournament (like fuckling Wisconsin does every year!)  If my thirst for a NC and a 17 year old can of Dirt Cheep beer is idiotic to you, so be it. But, when you mock the Bigotry of Low Expectiations line, just remember that you want Illinois to be Wisconsin. I aspire for Illinois to be Duke.

The message is that you cannot elbow our NPOY candidate in the head and expect nothing to happen in return. Instead, Illinois let Purdue walk all over them and then the HC calls the team soft.
