Yes like almost all our recruits there was some justification given to believe he was actually significantly underranked.  He wasnt.

Right, but at the time we didn’t know that, and many suspected he was underranked.
"He commented more than once that, 'You know, Hitler did some good things, too,'" Kelly recalled to The Times. Kelly said he would usually quash the conversation by saying "nothing (Hitler) did, you could argue, was good," but that Trump would occasionally bring up the topic again.

Of course, Illini fans always think they’re players are underranked. Just in this instance there was reasonable justification to think that might have been the case. Usually people just use the excuse of “bias” against Illinois. .

That explains every fan base of every team in college basketball. It’s not just Illinois.

Right, but at the time we didn’t know that, and many suspected he was underranked.

Yes, they overblew his ranking and expectations as they typically do with our recruits.  He didn't live up to their expectations, but he lived up to reasonable expectations based on where he was actually ranked, not the Illini fan head-canon.

“Their?”

Should I have used 'your'?

Yeah, 'their', the Illini fans who expected a guy ranked 80-90 nationally to play like a 5* recruit.

So you’re saying you were AOTC on Smith?

Not sure that is remotely close to what he meant, but a good effort to bait Spark nonetheless.

Above average use of the meme, but not top 3-5.

The general consensus was that he was a huge get for Underwood. Certainly the centerpiece of the incoming class. Spark is usually an optimist, so I’d be surprised if he didn’t have fairly high expectations of Smith when he committed. Since the old board is gone, no way to verify that, though.

As I recall, the vast majority of the board was pretty high on Smith’s upside.

The Smith commitment was met with applause and elation. I just find it ironic how quickly everyone downplayed Smith the moment he fell out of favor with Underwood.

Because he didn't play well when he was an Illini.

I wanted Smith to stay, I was vocal about that for sure.  I was definitely not one of the "good riddance" types, for Smith or Adam Miller or anyone else really.

Yes, the Smith commitment was celebrated - including by me.  It was the first top-100 commitment for a new coach.  But the idea that he was going to play like a top-25 recruit never held any water with me, and those expectations certainly caused a lot of those 'good riddance' type feelings.

He had a solid career, right about in line with his recruiting rankings.  I don't have anything bad to say about him.  We've obviously been fine without him though.

The Adam Miller commitment and transfer played out very similarly, and I feel the same about him.
