The general consensus was that he was a huge get for Underwood. Certainly the centerpiece of the incoming class. Spark is usually an optimist, so I’d be surprised if he didn’t have fairly high expectations of Smith when he committed. Since the old board is gone, no way to verify that, though.

As I recall, the vast majority of the board was pretty high on Smith’s upside.

I expected him to play about like a 50-100 ranked recruit - which is pretty typical of my expectations of a 50-100 ranked recruit.  You?

I wanted Smith to stay, I was vocal about that for sure.  I was definitely not one of the "good riddance" types, for Smith or Adam Miller or anyone else really.

Yes, the Smith commitment was celebrated - including by me.  It was the first top-100 commitment for a new coach.  But the idea that he was going to play like a top-25 recruit never held any water with me, and those expectations certainly caused a lot of those 'good riddance' type feelings.

He had a solid career, right about in line with his recruiting rankings.  I don't have anything bad to say about him.  We've obviously been fine without him though.

The Adam Miller commitment and transfer played out very similarly, and I feel the same about him.

That’s reasonable, and I don’t question anything you said here.

I don’t like giving up on players half way through their freshman year, particularly ones who are deemed as high profile/important recruits. I have no problem with the way things worked out. I still have a problem with the way Smith was treated by so many “fans.”

Had no hard expectations, I know he fell short of what I’d hoped. Especially as an Illini.

Yes, as we've discussed many times, you took the fact that he hadn't been evaluated as thoroughly as others to mean that he was way underranked, and were one of the ones expecting more like a 5* recruit coming in if I remember right.

There's two things that are true. One is that we were so desperate we threw a 50-100 quality guard into the starting lineup and expected him to play like top 30. Two is that he sucked, whined on his way out, and isn't even that good in his 5th year of college basketball at school 3. Common for guys at that level, but hard to swallow when similarly/lower ranked guys like Jordan Poole or Brad Davison or even Trent were in the same class (not to mention Wesson, Garza, Livers, etc.) and actually wound up helping their teams.

I never said he was underranked. But I always thought that “could” be the case. I did expect him to be a key building block of the rebuild.

I never pretended to know if he was underranked or not. I haven’t paid attention to recruiting in 15 years.

Whatever the case, Mark Smith seemed to suffer the same fate as Rich McBride. People who pay way more attention to recruiting than I do said he was much less dynamic in college than high school.

Bingo. I think we have a winner.
I didn’t know that. Thanks!

Because he was. They both were. It usually happens once they are playing against players of equal or better caliber talent. So what’s the issue?

I mean athletically. According to people who I think know more than me about high school basketball, they didn’t have the same bounce in their game.

McBride did not whine on his way out the door like Smith did. Then there is all the rumors about the transfer and not having to sit out a year.

Now that I think about it,  Mark Smith can get screwed with a broom up the ass at least 3 to 5 times a day. Fuck that guy.

Didn’t McBride lose athleticism after an injury?  Could be misremembering that. I know he was “the guy” on those Lanphier teams starting with a future Finals MVP.

Do we know for a fact Mark Smith “whined on his way out the door?” Or is that just a convenient narrative? Pretty sure his dad was more vocal than anyone else.

Allegedly. But he never showed dynamic athleticism in college. Not from day one.
