Illini Guardians sounds like a sham organization.  It’s just a fan collective to funnel money directly to players.

NIL is supposed to be about businesses like OSF hiring Kofi to do commercials.

This will end very poorly for Illinois and it’s a good think the DIA is not recognizing them.  Absurdly stupid to even go public with it too.  Draws unwanted attention

Sounds like the first innovative thing to happen down there in some time. Probably means someone else did it first. That they won't do $100k means they have some work to do if some incoming back up QB who then transferred from tO$U got $1m from his NIL deal.

Strange read that contradicts the article.

Uh, how long you been following Illini athletics?

It’s not 1977 anymore. Make it happen.
"He commented more than once that, 'You know, Hitler did some good things, too,'" Kelly recalled to The Times. Kelly said he would usually quash the conversation by saying "nothing (Hitler) did, you could argue, was good," but that Trump would occasionally bring up the topic again.

I think he was making a semi joke they couldn't do "$100 Million" to make a point about an extreme ask. Mannie Jackson claims he can make $500K.
If that is the case- he should stay unless some team tells him before declaring, they will give him a 2 way and keep him all year.

Bottom line is Kofi will always be a marginal NBA roster guy at best. It is just a different game. Might as well make $500K for sure this year and then see what happens.
Needs to work on passing, face up shooting game, and defensive footwork all summer.

I was strictly referring to the Guardian dude's 100k comment and what the Guardians can offer. Granted it just started, but I'm thinking that if Illinois is going to compete with the big boys, they are going to have to have the Guardians be able to step up offer more. Not sure there are enough big local businesses down there that can match what Columbus, for example, has. I just don't see Chicago-area businesses offering Illini players NIL deals at this point. Maybe I'm wrong.

This was a concern at the beginning.
Maybe it's time to go to 4 conferences with 16 teams each. Tell the NCAA to get lost, work out tv contracts for football and basketball that will include playoffs and championship games, and the 4 conferences negotiate their own NIL deals that take into account the economic disparities in locations.
The NCAA can have all of the non-revenue sports.

Yes, he can't read.

What am I missing?

Illini Guardians is a NFP set up by Illini fans to solicit donations.  The donations can be directly sent to players and in exchange its very vague how the guy said that the player "must do some charity work" to get the money.  Very shady.

This is the type of stuff that the DIA is correct to steer clear of.

Its one thing to having connections with Nike, or even local businesses to promote products, vs outright fans paying players.

If NIL is followed to the strict letter of the law, where its businesses paying players to be endorsers/advertisers, then I think what will happen is only a select few players will end up getting 99% of the endorsement money.

But if NIL basically becomes a free for all of fan collectives paying the entire team off - then obviously the schools with the alumni that have the biggest pockets will get the best players.  That I think is what Guardians is trying to do and I don't see anyway they can compete vs other teams, and its a game that in the end will not benefit Illinois

I think Illinois has just as many, if not more,  alums with some big pocket books than any SEC school. It just is a matter of where they spend their money.

FFS the FBI scandal hasn’t even landed programs in actual hot water with the NCAA. And that was well before the NCAA was strong armed into allowing the NIL stuff. You actually think these guys put together this collective to funnel funds to student athletes without doing any research?

Troll better.

LSU gonna get hammered. Already had to fire their coach.  And if it wasn’t going to get Illinois in hot water the DIA wouldn’t be disavowing it

I don't know why, but I goggled ....

And, yes, Illini Guardians is one of the 45 programs listed.

 https://businessofcollegesports.com/tracker-university-specific-nil-collectives/

"Increasingly, we’ve seen so-called “collectives” organizing to each benefit student athletes at a specific institution. The models vary somewhat, but the basic premise of most is that an alum, or group of alums, band together to form a company whose goal is to provide NIL opportunities to student athletes of that institution. How they find or provide those opportunities is where the models really differ."
