Why would Irvin want to leave an assistant gig for a demotion when he could wait a year and possibly parlay it to an assistant's gig as a package deal with JJ Taylor?
My guess is he is making around $100k at best at WIU. We can double or triple that now with plenty more to come later as he gets promoted.
That amount of money is nothing at Illinois to make him a support staff. We can have 10 video coordinators if we want I think. Only three designated assistant coaches though.
Also at WIU he cannot get the top CPL or in state kids in Illinois to come. He has gotten some second tier guys to come- (even a kid, Marcus Watson, who originally committed to Wake Forest who originally chose WF over Illinois/Chin Coleman).
I don't know all of the exact rules, but my guess is he would not be allowed to make official recruiting contacts off campus, but might be allowed to interact when recruits are on visits, either unofficial or official.
He might also be allowed to go watch HS and AAU games, but not interact with anyone. Anyone can buy a ticket.
I am sure someone else knows the exact rules better than me and the workarounds.
Bottom line- the players would know who Uncle Nick is and where to find him.
If we are considering the route of hiring handlers/family members/AAU guys- Nick Irvin makes a lot more sense than Tony Bagodonuts from da neighborhood.
It also means we are telling the college basketball world to GFY and do not ever fck with Illinois like this again. We are not your little bitch.
