Basically, because Guenther, Jr. can jog and chew gum at the same time unlike his predecessors, he needs to be extended and further enriched.
Contrary to the Scorat Bored idiots, the lesson to be learned from Illini basketball post-Weber was that the mistake was not in firing Weber, but in hiring even bigger buffoons to replace him. Guenther, Jr. gets props because the current guy is not as bad as the guy he hired when he first started and the idiots before that guy. Nice work if you can get it.
During his tenure we have seen marked improvements in performance, fundraising, and facilities in nearly every sport that Illinois offers.
I get that we all want to be amongst the elite right away, but Lord Guenther put us in a 20 year hole when it came to the revenue sports arms race.
Still don’t understand how throwing fits online holds anyone at the university accountable. We’ve greatly upgraded our facilities and the donor/fanbase has been reengaged. Our on-field performance has improved. We’ve got coaches that have proven they can win at a high level.
What we need to take the next step is lots and lots of NIL money. If we are half the university we think we are at cranking out successful graduates, we shouldn’t be losing many NIL battles.
As much as people hate the NIL/transfer portal era, there actually has never been a better time for a sleeping giant like Illinois to wake up.
