I’ve tried to make the point before but Lovie hire was actually pretty brilliant. Our options at that time were whatever was available in February when Whitman was hired, or running it back with Cubit and trying in the fall. We really needed to hire a minority in the next cycle for either football or basketball. Might as well take a flyer on the black NFL coach with state ties that’ll at least bring some credibility back to the program in the wake of the player abuse scandal.
Was he the guy for the long term? Hell no, but he did bring in some talent, made a bowl game, and left enough in the cupboard for Bielema to be competitive from day 1. We were able to leverage the buzz from the hire into program changing facilities upgrades through increased donations. Most importantly, it didn’t box us into having to choose from a narrow minority candidate pool with the prize pony of the DIA (basketball) when we inevitably fired Groce. Underwood has been a very good (bordering on great) hire and we almost certainly would have underperformed that hire had we been essentially forced to hire a minority.
