Guenther Lite Appreciation Thread

We’re gonna be top 10 this week, boys. I really like watching well coached, fundamental football where we just wear teams down with competence.

How about a toast to Mr. ECI himself, Guenther Lite? I think PAMan should lead!

Define what that’d be? What Whitman has done so far at Illinois is remarkable.

The plane was about 8 feet from crashing into the control tower and he got it corrected. Probably more dumb luck than anything.
"He commented more than once that, 'You know, Hitler did some good things, too,'" Kelly recalled to The Times. Kelly said he would usually quash the conversation by saying "nothing (Hitler) did, you could argue, was good," but that Trump would occasionally bring up the topic again.

Let’s face it, any program hiring Brett Bielema 4 years ago was desperate.

I think it may have been about being top 10.
Clemson was #8 but they won't be tomorrow.

Illinois is pretty much always desperate when hiring a football coach. Bielema was the perfect fit though. He’s been nothing short of stellar in his time here, even if you want to call a 45-19 road win against a team that won 9 games last year in the ACC and supposedly got better in the offseason, luck.

I agree, felt weird at the time but he was a good fit. I didn’t “like” him, but I thought it was a decent enough hire because he was an actual college football coach. Not a Lovie Smith Hail Mary or a MAC guy getting overpromoted.

Wut. We were lucky a somewhat accomplished coach was there and desperate enough to take the job. It’s not like Whitman fixed shit day 1.

Why are you trying to diminish his success is the better question…

I’ve tried to make the point before but Lovie hire was actually pretty brilliant. Our options at that time were whatever was available in February when Whitman was hired, or running it back with Cubit and trying in the fall.  We really needed to hire a minority in the next cycle for either football or basketball. Might as well take a flyer on the black NFL coach with state ties that’ll at least bring some credibility back to the program in the wake of the player abuse scandal.

Was he the guy for the long term? Hell no, but he did bring in some talent, made a bowl game, and left enough in the cupboard for Bielema to be competitive from day 1. We were able to leverage the buzz from the hire into program changing facilities upgrades through increased donations. Most importantly, it didn’t box us into having to choose from a narrow minority candidate pool with the prize pony of the DIA (basketball) when we inevitably fired Groce. Underwood has been a very good (bordering on great) hire and we almost certainly would have underperformed that hire had we been essentially forced to hire a minority.

Obviously, not much to complain about right now, but both programs went through a lot of pain to get to where they are; and I do feel like he kind of fell ass backwards into Bielema but it’s worked great for everyone

Desperate program is fortunate to have hired a desperate man.
