Anyone who doesn’t know that Trump is a clear and present danger to American democracy is either full of the dumb or loves an autocratic strongman.
"He commented more than once that, 'You know, Hitler did some good things, too,'" Kelly recalled to The Times. Kelly said he would usually quash the conversation by saying "nothing (Hitler) did, you could argue, was good," but that Trump would occasionally bring up the topic again.

It’s mostly true. The mere fact they typically treat him as a serious political figure and not the felon and sexual predator that he is is proof enough. Serious journalists would be working to ensure he can’t run and would be going to prison, where felons belong. The fact there isn’t a large outcry by the media that a felon is on the verge on being re-elected president tells you all you need to know. If journalists were doing their jobs, he’d in jail. The media loves Trump because he’s great for ratings.

There’s no media outcry? What the actual fuck are you talking about? All the mainstream media has done since 2015 is blast Trump for all things real or imagined. Because, as you say, it’s good for ratings.

Also that political show trial was a complete sham and all it did was serve to galvanize Trump’s base and imo did little to dissuade swing voters.

And furthermore, journalists don’t have any power anymore and cancel culture isn’t long for this world.

If the press were actually doing their jobs Trump wouldn’t even be in the race. Sure, the Rachel Maddow’s (and believe me, I’m no big fan of Maddow haven’t watched her in at least 4-5 years) of the world are attacking Trump left and right, but by and large they are negligent in their coverage of Trump. This article explains it well.

Or they believe it is all exaggerated and think that his financial policies will put more cash in their pocket and the nastier shit won't impact them as it is not directed at them.

If journalists did their job he'd be in jail? Huh? They are not prosecutors. If Merrick Garland had gotten off his ass from the start, maybe.

His supporters don't care if Trump's fit to be President or not.  All they care about is that he hits the same grievances and whinny complaints, and hates the same people, as they do.

I understand they are not prosecutors, but he should be covered as the criminal that he is, not the favorite to win the presidency.

There is no pressure on people like Garland because the media (and the political establishment) protect him. They legitimize him.

Give one example of a situation where Trump was blasted for something imagined. Show your work.

Yes.

I don't like to say "whinny complaints" - but he's playing a great tune. A lot of people are unhappy with their lot in life. Aside from it being unpleasant to blame one's self for your lot in life, in a country as rich as this one, if you aren't participating, there probably is a thumb on the scale against you.

Trump - either through ignorance or malice - develops a narrative that hits.

You got laid off or not being paid a lot. There are X number of Mexicans who came to the US and are working. They must have taken your job. But the labor market for Mexicans crawling across the border and marginally skilled US native citizens with reasonable English skills doesn't have a lot of overlap. You aren't losing your job to a Mexican, the Mexican is keeping your consumer prices lower. But that conclusion doesn't fix your problem.

Some kids in your area died of fentanyl. Must be the Mexicans smuggling it across the border. In fact, if there is demand for drugs, that demand will be satiated, imported through the border or home grown. I saw multiple billboards on I-70 in Missouri - "Fentanyl - an unwanted party guest" warning of the dangers of questionable street drugs. We don't have those billboards here. Drug use is more prevalent when despair is more prevalent. Fix the despair, fix the drug use - you can't just try to put a finger in the fentanyl dike, it will flow in some other hole. But it's hard to create better conditions and probably requires some governmental help but if you've been told the government is the problem and that they are wasting your tax dollars, a lot easier to just blame Mexico and we can send mens with guns and save our kids.
